It is with mixed emotions that I am participating in Mustaches for Kids. That's right, for the next four weeks, I will be subjecting myself to public humiliation and private doubt by growing what will no-doubt be a ridiculous looking Mustache. In order to justify this endeavor I need your support. Please sponsor my Mustache by picking a classroom project from the list below to support. And wish me and my Mustache luck. • Exploring the US and Beyond

    Funded Dec 9, 2009

My students are having an outstanding time using the various maps. They are learning about different parts of the country and the world. They are learning about the states and capitols just from using the map activities. It is so amazing to see them flourish through their map usage. They are remembering states' names and are able to point them out. They are learning direction using the compass rose on the maps and learning about legends and their purpose on a map.

We've had a couple of students transfer to other states; they were able to have an understanding about the distance from state to state which helped in explaining why the student had to transfer. I was able to pair the maps with books about the United States and the Continents. It has been a fun, exciting learning experience. I am grateful that you supported our projected that is aiding my students in concrete learning. We are on a wonderful whirlwind of learning.

I'm excited in knowing from this project a geographical foundation is being established. They are embarking on lifelong learning cross-curriculum strategies. It is really fun and a joy to see them learn in such a manner. The math skills, vocabulary skills, research skills, etc., are reinforced that their foundation can only stand [and not fall] over long periods of time.

I really do thank you whole heartily for providing an opportunity for me to equip my students with geographical skills and enhance all of their other capabilities. You are one of a kind, thanks! ”

  • Puzzling Puzzles Encourage Thinking Skills

    Funded Dec 1, 2009

We love our puzzles! The puzzle center has been very active during playtime since they arrived. The children have enjoyed working on puzzles by themselves as well as working cooperatively with their peers to solve them. It is amazing to watch a few of the children work cooperatively to solve the large floor puzzles. I love hearing, "Ms. L, come see what we did!" I am thrilled when I walk over and see that they worked cooperatively on their problem solving skills to solve the large floor puzzles. Especially when you look at the pictures and see that some of the children are about the same size as the floor puzzles!

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for providing my students with puzzles that are challenging for the multiple abilities in my classroom! ”

  • The Beauty of Poetry: Genre Study Project Part Three

    Funded Nov 24, 2009

Wow! Have your books made an impact on my students! Not a day goes by that a student doesn't share a poem from one of the many poetry books you have donated to our classroom. The children have enjoyed the poetry so much, they have created "read-along" tapes, where they have recorded themselves reading their favorite poems. During reading time, children pop a tape into the player and listen to their classmates read their favorite poems to them. We recite and chant poetry on our way to the lunchroom and between classes. Simply put, your donation has helped me weave fun and poetry throughout our daily lives, and I thank you so much for helping me nurture that love of poetry.

Furthermore, several of my students have begun writing their own poetry collections. One child is writing poems inspired by her grandmother's illness and her parents' divorce. Only in third grade, she is just one child that is discovering that poetry can not only make us laugh, but also help us through some of the more difficult moments in life.

Moments like these wouldn't happen without the generous support from donors like yourselves. We thank you and as their teacher, I want to let you know you have deeply impacted 27 children, helping them discover not only the beauty of poetry, but the power of great books.”

MY STUDENTS ARE VERY BRIGHT AND INTELLIGENT, THROUGH YOUR GIFT TO MY SCHOOL IT WILL HELP TO EXPOSE KIDS TO GRAPHIC ARTS PROGRAMS THAT THEY WOULD NOT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE. AS AN ART TEACHER WITH A LIMITED BUDGET YOUR DONATION HAS ENRICHED THE LIVES OF KIDS THAT BY ALL ACCOUNTS AND STATISTICS DON'T MATTER. YOUR GIFT IS AN AFFIRMATION THAT THERE ARE GOOD PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO CARE ABOUT THE NEXT GENERATION COMING UP BEHIND THEM.”

  • Students love Novels

    Funded Dec 15, 2009

I would like to send my sincere thanks to you for donating the books, Bud, Not Buddy. My students really loved the book and even more, loved being the first ones to use brand new novels. This story captured each and every learner in my room, and I could not have done it without your generosity. It is people like you that make my job a little bit easier and definitely more enjoyable. Students learn so many skills from reading a novel and with Bud, Not Buddy a bit of history too.

It was so exciting to see the smiles on their faces when they read Bud's Rules and Things, and even better so see their sympathy for the character, who is in search of a father. We had many in-depth class conversations and the students were actually sad when the book was finished.

I could not have had this experience with my students without your donation. I am forever grateful. I can't wait to read it again with next year's class!

    Many Thanks!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Higgins

  • A Better Reader We Can Become

    Funded Nov 24, 2009

I wish to thank you for your generous donation toward my much needed classroom library books. As part of the daily reading workshop, my students self-select and independently read texts from our classroom library. It is important that I expose my students to a variety of genres and have available a variety of reading levels. Many of my students are prodigious readers and before long many of these readers feel as though the choices are thin. I need to continue to build this library with high-interest text and your contribution to this request has put many books into the hands of my students. Most importantly, your donation has funded books by a well-known author (and former English teacher) whose content and characters reflect those of the students I teach. To maintain an interest in reading, I want to provide my students with books that represent various cultures and themes but too it is important that my students read about the lives of characters who look like them and have similar life experiences to them.

Thank you so very much for making this goal possible. Your kindness is greatly appreciated.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Belanski

  • Have a Heart

    Funded Nov 25, 2009

Thank you again for your generosity and your belief that extra curricular activities are essential to keeping our students safe and by providing our students with the opportunity to par take in a sport they love.

The materials that you have provided have helped the girls soccer season begin on a great note. The shin guards that you have provided have keep the girls safe from injury in practice and are desperatley needed in your varsity games which begin this week! The soccer balls that were given have helped the team build confidence since they now have balls that we can use in games and practice and enough so that we are able to do so effectively. Furthermore the socks you have provided will save lots of headaches come our first games this week, no more sharing socks between players.

Thank you again for demonstrating to our students that there are still people out there that care and that they are important.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gomez

  • Help Us Measure Up!

    Funded Nov 25, 2009

Thank you for you kind gift. Your generosity has made, and will continue to make, a large difference in the lives of my students. Science teachers often rely on explanations and drawings for lessons. To have the students participate in a hand on activity is much more rewarding. The tools that you have funded will enable students to take an abstract idea and make it more concrete.

Your personal commitment was incredibly helpful and allowed my students to compare and contrast mass and weight with 100% accuracy. By using the "Triple Beam Balances", we were able to measure the mass of several different objects and then go on to calculate the density of the object.

Again, please accept my heartfelt thanks for your donation. Your assistance means so much to me but even more to my students. Thank you from all of us!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Kostencki

  • Net It Up!!

    Funded Dec 22, 2009

Our team has already put the new volleyball standards to excellent use. The girls no longer struggle to carry extremely heavy standards across the gym and are able to spend more time practicing volleyball skills. We are even able to tighten the net without trying to find a male student to assist use. With all the time we are saving, I have been able to incorporate fun team building activities into our practice time. The lighter poles have eliminated any concerns administration might have had about the gym floor becoming damaged during our summer practices; therefore the Principal has given us permission to hold practice this summer for the first time in four years. Thank you again to all the donors that made these things possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dollinger

  • Who's In, Who's Out?

    Funded Dec 7, 2009

I sincerely thank you for the gift of books for my classroom library. It was an exciting day when the books started arriving. The students were begging to open the packages, but I wanted to wait for all the invoices in order to do an inventory. When I finally started doing the inventory, the students would hover around trying to look at the books and asking if they could read this one or that one. I chased them away until I had accounted for the numerous books.

The day I allowed them to choose a book for our silent reading, there was complete silence in this middle school classroom. One student, Michael, after reading the first few pages called me over and said, "You know how I hate reading, Ms. Allebach? Well, this book is really good and I'm sure that this time I'm going to finish it!" He has a habit of starting books but not finishing them. Another student who struggles with reading and receives special services hasn't stopped reading since we've received the books. There have been numerous times I have 'caught' her reading a book during a lesson. It's been very hard to tell her to stop reading when that's what I want her to be doing!

I have overheard the students recommending books to each other and I have seen them swapping books. These are the kinds of positive outcomes I celebrate as a teacher. Additionally, my student teacher and I are going to create a thematic unit based on the book, "To Kill a Mockingbird". We look forward to exploring another time period and the theme of justice.

As you can see, you have made my life more rewarding as a teacher as I see the students excited and engaged in the books. The students have encountered the horrific world of the Holocaust but have also seen how hope endures. They have read stories about other teenagers and have connected with the issues that are addressed, such as identity and self-esteem. The world of reading has come alive to them in new ways. Again, a heartfelt thank you to each of you for making this a reality.”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher
