It is with mixed emotions that I send you this e-mail. That’s right, throughout this entire month of February I have been subjecting myself to “public humiliation and private doubt” by growing what has turned into a ridiculous looking Mustache.
In order to justify this endeavor I need your support. I am asking you to “sponsor” my Mustache by making a contribution to one of the classroom projects listed below. You can participate in a Mustache plan, like donating $1 per day of my Mustache growth ($30 in total). Because this is for the kids, and their education, any donation size, be it bigger than $30 or smaller, is welcome. The money raised will go directly to local low-income classroom projects that are listed on this website. Your generosity will be both well utilized and greatly appreciated by not only the children but the teachers, faculty and parents involved with these projects.
I also encourage you to pass this link on to other Mustache Enthusiasts who may be interested in donating.
Thank you for your help and support, your generosity is dearly appreciated by a great many people. hide
Thank you all for your generous donations! I wish you would be able to see the impact that your donations have made, but since you can't see it firsthand, let me tell you. The children were so amazed to get the big boxes in the mail. We stopped class (just for a few minutes) to open them up. It was amazing.
Now that we have these new tools, I am able to be a better teacher. A lot of our reading lessons are now more engaging because of the projector. We studied for our PSSA's (our state standardized test) on the projector.
I also want to thank you for enabling me to purchase a new CD player. Previous to the new one, I had brought in an old one from my house, and it was not nearly loud enough! That is, if it even worked at all. (My kids always joked and asked my CD player if it felt like playing our story that day!)
Your kind and generous donations made such an impact in my classroom, and I am brought to tears to think of your kindness. It's nice to know that people out there care about my kids just as much as I do. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
I hope you are all well! I wanted to extend a personal and heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you who helped to make this project happen.
We have spent the last month reading the first of the two novels, Somewhere in the Darkness, and the students really did love the book. So many of them do not have books at home, or a quiet place that they can sit to read, so my classroom is the one place where they can really enjoy the experience of "getting lost in a book".
For many of the students, the story of a teenage boy who has not seen his father due to him being in prison was a familiar one. It was a great opportunity for the students to feel safe to share some of their own thoughts, through the safety-net of the novel.
The students are already asking when we can start reading "Hoops" and I'm hoping to find a way to read quickly and fit it in before the end of the year.
Thank you again for your generosity! It is such an amazing thing to see how many people truly care about the children of America. You in fact care so much that you choose to invest in their future. It is my hope and desire that your gift, of the storytelling kits, will not just be a fun center for my kids. But that it will inspire them to embrace reading and make it a lifelong habit.
My students come to me with a one to two year deficit in language. The more they hear, read, and retell stories, the more their vocabulary will increase and the closer they will get to their peers in education. These storytelling kit books are at levels that most of my students are able to read independently. But even if they are unable to read it they can listen to some of them.
These books will enrich their vocabulary, heighten their interest in literature, and open up a whole new world to them. I hope that over time that we can close the educational gap that divides the children here in the USA. Your gift will take us one step closer to that goal. ”
With gratitude,
Ms. B.
