  • Learning to Love Literature

    Funded May 23, 2011

Thank you all so much for donating to my classroom project "Learning to Love Literature". I was thrilled to have this project funded and be able to receive the listening center and wonderful collection of books on CD for my classroom. I have always wanted my students to have access to a listening center so that multiple students could listen to the same story at the same time - and now they can. The class uses the listening center daily and enjoys the wide variety of stories to choose from. I enjoy seeing their little heads huddled together as they listen to one of their favorites stories. It is also quite funny when they try to carry on a conversation about the book with their headphones on!

Thank you again for your generous donation to my classroom. It will help my students develop a love for reading. It is really amazing to have donors like you supporting my classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schroeder

  • Reading is Fun!

    Funded May 3, 2011

We cannot thank you enough for you generous donations. The students have started using the materials in their everyday literacy centers. They enjoy the many books on CD that we received. They also love re-creating the stories using the felt board and characters. During independent reading, they read the books that we received and are always walking around sharing their book with friends.

Your generosity means so much to us. The Dual-Immersion program is new to the district and although we love it and see how positive it is, we also acknowledge that it takes time to grow. Our literacy resources were very low and we weren't creating the atmosphere that we wanted for literacy.

With your help our students are participating in fun activities everyday that are building their love of reading and learning. We appreciate your time, thought, and donation helping us make that a reality in the classroom. Thank you! ”

  • Marvelous Math Materials for Magnificent Mathematicians

    Funded May 26, 2011

Thank you so much for the math games, math manipulatives and math related picture books. Our classroom uses them daily! We play the math games for 20 minutes three times a week and I read the math books in English to try and bridge what they are learning in math in Spanish with cognates in English. We are so grateful for you contributions as they help us navigate difficult math concepts and also enriches the lives of struggling mathematicians. Our school is currently facing government sanctions which takes money from our budget and gives it to private tutors. For that reason, we are extremely limited in our ability to purchase extra materials. Thank you again, we are very grateful for your support. ”

    Mrs. Hill

  • Snap A Moment of Goodness

    Funded Jul 31, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous contributions to our classroom. Our students are so thrilled to see the world through a different lens! We received the four cameras and use them every day. The pictures that we posted were of a science lesson where the kids were using objects to learn about balance. Students helped take pictures of each other, I printed them out, we cut and glued them into our science notebooks, and wrote about how we made the objects balance.

We have taken the cameras on field trips, outside to recess, to classroom share-time, to school assemblies, and in the hallways. They take wonderful, clear pictures and we can use them to help us write about or events. Students have been so thrilled to use the pictures to help them explain their thoughts and accomplishments. I have been emailing pictures to families to keep for themselves. We also made Power Point presentations to show during Open House Night and Parent-Teacher Conferences. The families love to see their kids doing academic activities.

You have made a huge impact on our world and we hope that you accept our greatest thank you! God bless and take care!”

  • Be Proud Of Who You Are!

    Funded Apr 13, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous donation. The students were so excited when all of the art supplies arrived! They were jumping up and down. A few students who really like art even did a little dance!

It really makes me happy to know that there are people who care about public education and want to help my students be successful. Because of you, we now have art supplies to create culture boxes that can display our culture. Since this school is very culturally diverse I feel it is extra important to teach students to be proud of who they are and where they come from. ”

  • Enhancing Writing Through Scrapbooking

    Funded Aug 29, 2011

We are so happy to have the color printer in our classroom! Having color photos to put on our scrapbook pages is a real joy. We do so many exciting activities in our class (science experiments, word study buddies, writing, math, reading, field trips) and now we have a way to take photos AND print them. We use the photos every week as prompts for our writing. We are creating scrapbooks that highlight our identities as learners.

Our scrapbook time is also a wonderful outlet for our creative selves. The weekly scrapbook session is a highlight for basically everyone in our class. It is a chance to explore color, shapes, patterns, collage art, stencils, stamps and illustration. It is delightful to see how the pages get fuller and fuller each week, as students are noticing new ideas on friends' pages, and experimenting with new media.

The scrapbooks will be treasures that last long beyond this school year. Thank you so much for making this activity possible for the students in my class.”

  • Support Optimal Learning Throughout The Day With An ELMO!

    Funded Apr 28, 2011

I can't tell you how grateful I am to all of you who donated to fund the purchase of a document camera for my classroom. I wrote an additional grant through Donors Choose for a projector and have both components up and running in my classroom on a daily basis. I have learned so much about technology already, but the kids in my class are the real beneficiaries of this grant. They absolutely love having the document camera and projector in our room.

Our document camera and projector are connected to a computer, allowing our class to collectively and collaboratively access the Internet and enhance our learning. In the past week we have made a video of our room singing class songs and reading class poems, which we projected continuously during our Open House. We also watched an interview with children's author Kevin Henkes (we are doing an author study about him) and checked the weather all over the world, making comparisons to our own conditions outside.

At the beginning of the school year, when we were establishing many, many routines, I noticed a huge difference in the attention span and engagement of my students during lessons with the document camera. Students LOVE to bring their writing up to be put on the "Big screen" as we call it. They also love practicing their handwriting and sharing math strategies so that everyone in the whole class can see it! It has truly revolutionized my teaching practices and I am so very grateful for your generosity.”

  • Giving, So We Can Give Back

    Funded Apr 13, 2011

Hi and thank you so much for donating so we could purchase materials for our mosaic project. We are overwhelmed with the amount of materials that were just sent our way from Blick. My students and I have combined the tiles, glass, and mosaic pieces you have given us with some that we made ourselves. We are so appreciative to have extra materials because the ones that we made ourselves are not enough. We are making 15 concrete stepping stones for our school garden. So far we are laying them out and they look as if they are going to be BEAUTIFUL! My students can't believe how generous strangers are. We appreciate Donors Choose so much. What an amazing resource for teachers to get amazing materials for our classrooms that we would otherwise not be able to have. Thank you SO much!”

  • Homeless Math Supplies

    Funded Mar 30, 2011

Thank you guys so much for your donations! I am so excited that our classroom now has an area dedicated to math supplies that will be easy for me to locate and easy for the children to use. Our math area will now be organized and students will be able to locate items that they need on their own without waiting for me to dig through boxes in random corners of the room! :)

This will improve our math class on a daily basis for years to come. We now have a place for each student to find the math supplies that they will be working with for the week. There is even room for me to have an extra credit math area where students can easily find challenging (but fun) math worksheets that they can work on in their free time!

Once again, thank you so much. I know that my students were really excited when it arrived. They were all begging to help me set up every one's math cubby. ”

  • Hungry For A Good Book: Feeding My Students' Need To Read

    Funded Apr 16, 2011

I would like to send a warm thank you out to each of you for your thoughtful and generous donations to our classroom library. When the boxes with the books arrived, the students begged me to open the boxes immediately! Their faces light up as they saw piles of fresh books, much nicer than any we've ever had in our library before. The students were dying to get their hands on the books. There was something for everyone in those boxes; books about dogs for my animal lovers, mysteries for my critical thinkers, and several different series for my students who have fallen in love with popular characters (Ramona, Nate the Great, and Fancy Nancy, to name a few!) . The books were used daily, with many students reading them for more than 30 minutes at a time. The wide variety of books was accessible to, and appropriate for, all students, including my English language learners, my special education students, my talented and gifted children, and every other student in my class who just loves to read, or who needed motivation to read. So often the books that I buy for our classroom are second-hand, with words inside the book that are as quality as ever, but with covers that look beaten and worn. The new books in our room are treated with awe and respect. Their bright, relevant, and appealing covers excite my avid readers and entice my reluctant ones. Thank you for helping me give this gift too my students. It is because of you that their love for reading has been encouraged, rewarded, and perpetuated. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cahill
