True Crime for the College Bound

Funded Oct 17, 2009

Grigor, one of the students who was the least interested in being in my Honors Lit class approached me and said, "Miss! This is the first book I've read in almost three years!" I can't say I am proud that my student said that (because it seems a horrible indictment of the kind of education this college bound student has received thus far), but I am relieved that the donation you made to our classroom made it possible to inspire my reluctant reader to finish a book at some point during his high school career.

His response was not the only one that showed enthusiasm for In Cold Blood. Leomaris mentioned missing her bus stop because she was so engaged in what she was reading. Liliana loved the book. Even David talked about how much he recommended it to a friend of his.

In Cold Blood has been a great boon to my curriculum. In studying the book, we've discussed a variety of topics including bias, the transformation of nonfiction writing and journalism, truth in writing, homophobia, justice, and violence. These topics are compelling to high school seniors who are willing to think about their own place in the world.

I thank you for your generosity in supporting our class and in supporting education.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Gullo
