  • Science Manipulatives for the Spanish Classroom

    Funded Jan 28, 2013

I just wanted to give you a few examples of how your generous gift has made an impact on my classroom with my students. My kindergartners were SO curious about the insect specimens I was able to purchase. They were able to see from multiple different examples of REAL insects that insects really DO have 6 legs, three body parts and two antennae. And they really wanted to know if they were alive and could "get out"!

My 3rd graders loved seeing "The Umbrella" (rainforest story) told through the stuffed animals from the story. It made the language (all in Spanish) come alive for them. Even my students who struggle with learning in English (let alone a second language) were able to access the content of the story and learn some unfamiliar names of animals in Spanish.

My 2nd graders were so engaged with the barn and farm animals that I was able to purchase for them while we were studying "la granja" (the farm). It was definitely the "preferred center" and if they didn't use Spanish they couldn't stay. LOTS of Spanish was spoken in that center!

Thank you again for helping my students learn Spanish through learning about the world and the environment!”

  • Growing Gardens for Growing Minds

    Funded Jan 17, 2013

Thank you for your generous donation of two raised garden beds. The fifth graders are very thankful to have these beds under their care. They feel a sense of ownership for them and pride in having plants to take care of and call their own.

We have been able to enjoy the vegetables that we have grown. We made three types of coleslaw with our cabbage and steamed brocoli as well. Students were even able to take home vegetables to share with their families.

Photosynthesis is a fifth grade standard. I know their experience in the garden this year has helped them to understand how a plant grows. The students and I have learned together through trial and error.

I am very proud of them. Their dedication to the garden is exciting. I am looking forward to seeing them pass on their garden responsibilities to the new fifth graders, as they will be leaving for middle school in a month. The garden project this year was a success and I look forward to many more successful years gardening with my students.”

  • My Corn is Taller Than Yours: The Science Behind Agriculture

    Funded Nov 21, 2012

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for contributing to my project. We received the four stereoscopes about two weeks ago and immediately put them to use in my agri-science classroom. We began by breaking down the different parts of a living soil, including some micro-organisms and finished the unit by breaking down a potting mix and describing the appearance and function of the different components of those mixes.

I look forward to using these scopes in several other classes and lessons in the future. They will allow us to better see the smaller aspects of flowers and plants. They will also allow us the opportunity to better study parts of mammals and insects. Without your support, my students would have missed this wonderful opportunity.

Thank you once again for your continued support of American education and my agricultural classroom. Your donations have made a difference!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Mayes

  • Help My Bookworms Have More Books To Read

    Funded Nov 15, 2012

Thank you for the wonderful books. My students are very excited and anxious and want to read all of the amazing books in one day. They now have books that are fun and interesting and they are now more excited about reading time than ever. I want my students to be excited about reading. Having new books that are of interest to them makes all of the difference in the world. Thanks for supporting these amazing children. I hope that you will continue to support them as the school year progresses. They are always in need of books. Thanks from all of us.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. L.

  • Creepy Crawlies In The Classroom!

    Funded Oct 16, 2012

Thank you so very much for donating science materials to our Kindergarten classes! The root view finder, ant farm, insect life cycle kits, live insects and the inflatable butterfly life cycle are amazing additions to our science program!

Every year it gets a little more difficult to fund any extra materials for classroom projects and by donating these materials you have enriched our students' learning experiences! Kindergarten aged children learn best by using all five of their senses so science manipulatives that they can interact with are essential.

I want you to know that our students are extremely excited to begin our science exploration! Without the materials you donated they would not be nearly as thrilled so here is a HUGE "Thank you!" from all of our students!”

  • Harlem Renaissance Gardens

    Funded Oct 19, 2012

Thank you to all who donated to make this project possible! Each and every one of you made an immediate and profound difference in the lives of students at our high school. The models, slides, and plant experiments that you all helped purchase are being used to integrate our school community garden with life science classes.

It is one thing to read about plant cells, or the impact of pollution on the environment; it is a whole other level of learning to see and touch and experience these ideas directly. Labs are already recognized as a critical component of science education. By integrating our labs with our community gardening program, we are providing our students with the chance to both learn about life sciences and experience the natural world directly.

We know that green spaces are important, and every study that has been done shows both academic and psycho-social benefits for young people who participate in garden and nature programs. Your generous donation has helped grow our program, and the benefits will reach into our school community for years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Stanley

  • Growing Future Agrarians

    Funded Dec 27, 2012

You should have seen the faces of my students as they donned their new gardening gloves and we headed out to the garden. Since we have had incredibly cold weather lately, I fear that our potato and carrot plants were not doing well at all. The carrots were fine, and are still growing, but the potatoes had all been frostbitten. So we decided to harvest what we could! What a joy it was to have the kids be able to dig into the dirt freely (and a bit more warmly) than they would have without their new gardening gloves. They were so excited to hunt and find potatoes in the earth. We will be cleaning them up and making a big pot of mashed potatoes to eat in class.

Without your generosity, and the help of Donors Choose to organize, my students would not have had this wonderful experience. They are very excited about what we will be planting next, and I think that I will see about getting some spring vegetables like peas to go along with our carrots. However, we will wait until the weather warms a bit. I foresee that these gardening gloves will be used for many years to come, with many future classes. Again, thank you so very much.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Haven

  • Once Upon An Insect

    Funded Oct 27, 2012

On behalf of my students and I, I want to say thank you so much to all of you for funding our project, "Once Upon An Insect"! Words cannot express how grateful we are for your generosity. We have already gotten so much enjoyment out of the materials you helped to purchase for us!

The books have been awesome to help reinforce what they have already learned about insects and also helped them to learn new things too! The "Can Do!" games have been a great tool to use in helping my students to practice their reading.

Thanks again for your kindness, it is much appreciated!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Schutt

  • Bugs! Bugs! Bugs!

    Funded Oct 22, 2012

Thank you so much for your generous donation of live bugs for my second grade classroom. I was very happy to be able to tell my students about the bugs that we received for our science time. We have already received the ants and my students are fascinated by them and love to watch them build their tunnels through the gel. Today we received the caterpillar larva and I am excited to show them the larva and watch them turn into butterflies. These materials have made a tremendous difference in my classroom and have helped me to provide a variety of hands on educational lessons for my students as well as opportunities for them to observe live insects. Again, I greatly appreciate your generosity. These materials have made a huge difference in my classroom and my students are enjoying them every day.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. T.
