Brian Peterson's Mustache

It is with mixed emotions that I am participating in Mustaches for Kids. That's right, for the next four weeks, I will be subjecting myself to public humiliation and private doubt by growing what will no-doubt be a ridiculous looking Mustache. In order to justify this endeavor I need your support. Please sponsor my Mustache by picking a classroom project from the list below to support. And wish me and my Mustache luck. • Support Materials For Insect Science Unit

    Funded Feb 5, 2010

I want to thank you for your generous gift. My school district provides for a bare bones science experience studying insects. I have had to supplement through the years with my own money to provide books and hands-on materials to make the learning of science come alive for my students.

With your gifts, my students are immersed in butterfly and insect science with books, music, science videos, puzzles, art supplies, and puppets! They love to learn from all of these hands-on activities. More importantly, I see them really understanding the material. They understand the life cycle, different kinds of butterflies, where they live, and how they are important to us. I see ecologists in the making! Three cheers for science!

Thanks again! You have made a difference in the lives of children.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Robb

  • Literacy and Music

    Funded Jan 29, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our music classroom. We received the brand new Yamaha recorders about two weeks ago. What happiness! We got to work almost immediately: Learning to produce our first musical tones and to apply our understanding of music notation to playing the recorder. The students are so proud.

Their music skills are already improving exponentially. Suddenly they have a reason to know how long a whole note lasts and whether C is higher or lower than A. They listen to themselves and to their classmates. They help each other reach for mastery knowing it won't sound really good until we are all on the right notes! It's like magic.

Your gift will influence these children for years, as evidenced in this story I like to tell on myself: Several years ago I was sitting with car windows open on a busy street corner near my school. (This corner put the 'hood' in neighborhood.) I saw two teenage boys ambling towards my car. They looked a little shady. I admit I suddenly remembered hearing about a carjacking near by, not long before. These guys were clearly coming towards me. I avoided eye-contact and hoped the light would change so I could go, when I heard, "Hey! Ms. U? 'You still teach those little flute-y things?" Of course, they were two former students who remembered their days in my music room fondly---including learning to play the recorder.

Thanks to your generosity, the answer to his question will be a resounding "YES!" I do still teach "those flute-y things". But I couldn't if it weren't for Donors Choose and you. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Underhill

  • First Grade Literacy Support

    Funded Feb 4, 2010

Words can't express enough my gratitude to you all, generous donors who helped me be a better teacher and helped my students be a better reader and a better person in the world.

When these books arrived and the shipping boxes sat on the counter in the office, when everyone in the office announced the box was for my class from the donorschoose, literally the cheers in their voices brightened my day. When I opened the box in front of my students. These little six-year-olds could hardly hold their excitement in their bodies. They wanted to run over to the box and rip it open with their little hands. Of course, they were warned beforehand to stay in their seats and watch me open the box. Then they shouted when they saw the books. "Yeah! More books. Mrs.B. Can I choose my favorite books? Can I read them now?" "We should write thank you cards to the donors." one suggested.

As you may know, you provided me some books to teach good learner behaviors, some books for me to demonstrate good reading strategies, some books for me to use as writing prompts and some books for my students to just enjoy reading and enjoy being a first grader.

We will definitely use these books for a long time. My next year's students, the students' after that year, and more will all benefit from your donation.

Your donation showed your generosity and caring for education. Your investment will be well remembered and in return, you made the world a much better place to live.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Bucknam

  • Inspiring the Scientific Mind

    Funded Feb 8, 2010

Wow! I can't fully express the gratitude, excitement, and thanks for your donation to my students. Yeah! It is great to see that you share my vision for reaching out to our young scientists and inventors of the future.

The tools that you have funded will enable students to explore various areas of science. In addition, I will be able to fully demonstrate experiments, and allow my students to explore science through inquiry. We're off to one of our three field study trips this month! Students will be studying a local watershed's ecosystem and water quality. They will also participate in a community service activity at each visit. I can't believe the supplies will arrive in time for our first adventure!

Thank you so much. I can't wait to share this good news with my students tomorrow morning! ”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher
