  • Sports Writing

    Funded Oct 12, 2010

Thank you so much for your donation to my classroom. In this, our final year as a school, the books that you provided for my students gave them something to look forward to in the school year. They absolutely enjoyed the books -- coming to class each day ready to discuss with their groupmates, and debate the merits of the material. The books led to great discussions about steroid use in sports, as well as the corruption of college athletics. What wonderful ideas for high school senior athletes to discuss every day!

Thank you again for your support!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cornet

  • Reluctant To Read....

    Funded Nov 11, 2009

Thank you so much for contributing funds towards building our classroom library. Students really enjoy having a variety of books to choose from and be able to read within the classroom. Your donation helps us to offset the cuts made to our library stock and hours.

Your donation has helped give my students a refuge from their crazy lives, and from the turbulent times in our District. The know that every day they can come in to simply sit and get lost in a book.

Once again, thank you so much for your support of my classroom! These kids are totally worth it!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cornet

  • Dive into Reading!

    Funded Oct 9, 2009

I believe that all children can learn and that it is my responsibility, as an educator, to provide students with equal opportunities to learn. Given the diversity in the classrooms today, it is essential for me to provide students with a variety of learning experiences to ensure that they will be successful in life. Since education is so under funded, it makes my job at achieving that more difficult in providing students with these opportunities. I am incredibly grateful for people like you who value the importance of an education that sets high standards for all students.

When I received the package of reading games I was in disbelief! It was an amazing feeling to know that there are people out there who have wonderful aspirations for my students. The items that you have donated to my classroom allow my students to have fun while learning, work independently, work in small groups, and provide them with the opportunity to teach and help their classmates.

As soon as I could open the box, which was immediately, I began to think of all the fun and exciting experiences my students would now be able to have. My students are given the opportunity to engage in many wonderful learning experiences through the supplies that you have donated. My students absolutely love using the reading games during Reading Workshop. Reading Workshop has now become their favorite part of the day because of all the new fun and exciting activities they get to take part in! All of these dreams that I had are now coming true because of your generous donation.

I cannot begin to tell you how many lives you have affected and will affect through your donation. Thank you for your support in assuring that all students learn to read and have fun in doing so! ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Lehtinen

  • Making English "Pop" for Students

    Funded Oct 26, 2009

Thank you so much for generously donating to my project: Making English "Pop" for Students. The projector that you enabled me to purchase has significantly enhanced the way that high school students engage with literature inside the classroom. It may sound corny, but in many ways, the books we read have "come alive" right in front of students' eyes. When reading Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild together with Henry David Thoreau's Walden, we were able to view Chris McCandless' self-portrait inside the Alaskan wilderness, as well as scenic images from Walden Pond. Student engagement in the material has vastly increased since the introduction of the projector (and, as a result, other multimedia) in the classroom.

As their English teacher, I have noticed an improvement in students' ability to focus on a task with the use of the projector. At times I will display PowerPoint slides that provide students with specific directions, models, options, and tips, and I have observed students take control of their learning and become self-directed learners. Instead of having to listen to their teacher dictate her expectations out loud (and instead of having the teacher repeat herself over and over again), students are able to reference the slides if they have doubts or concerns about what to do next.

In sum, your generous donation to the classroom has not only enabled students to fully engage in literature and become more mature and independent learners, but it has also made me a better teacher. The use of visuals inside the classroom enables me to communicate goals and expectations clearly to students, and therefore permits students to succeed. The classroom is quickly becoming the place where technology is needed most, and I truly thank you for jettisoning this teacher's classroom into the 21st century. ”

  • Alfombra de Apredizaje - Learning Carpet

    Funded Nov 3, 2009

I would like to thank all of you for your generous donation to our classroom. On behalf of all of my students, THANK YOU! Everyone who walks into our classroom comments on our beautiful rug. Not only is it beautiful, bit it is extremely functional! Now we all sit comfortably in our classroom and learning together is so much more fun with all of our space! We have used our rug in so many ways. We use our bilingual carpet during both Spanish and English instruction. We can already read all of the words on the rug in both Spanish and English, isn't that great? We can read all of the numbers on the rug in both Spanish and English as well. I credit all of this to our rug. We definitely could not do all of this a few weeks ago! It is everyone's favorite place to learn together. Thank you for fostering a sense of community in our classroom. The rug that you have donated is the epicenter for all of our learning. We can't thank you enough!”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher
