  • Practice Makes Perfect

    Funded Mar 29, 2010

Thank you for giving my students and myself the opportunity to have this wonderful device in our very own classroom. Having an interactive whiteboard is a tremendous benefit to my students. My students are now able to participate in engaging interactive lessons that meet their various learning styles.

I can bring the world into my very own classroom. My students are being provided with learning experiences that will enable them to gain the skills that they need to succeed in the 21st century. Your kindness means the world to my students and me.

Your donation has guaranteed that all students who enter my classroom will experience authentic learning and the subject matter at hand will come to life! Once again thank you - you are keeping students smiling and expressive in sharing their interactive learning journey.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Poirier

  • Focusing Students With a Document Camera

    Funded Nov 29, 2009

I am so happy to be able to use a document camera to open another door to the world for my students. They are able to see, up close, many things including scientific specimens, documents and texts and photos. They are so excited to see the world bigger than life on the television.

The next step for them is getting an LCD projector so that the images become even larger for them.

The document camera brings learning to the 21st century for students who can benefit greatly from the visual input that this new exciting device brings.”

  • Showing Responsibility for our Ecosystem

    Funded Dec 7, 2009

We would like to thank you. When we were studying about systems and how an ecosystem works it was very helpful to have a visual. The students had a specific topic about the ecosystem that they had to present on. The students used the model of the community of animals to explain during their presentations. Once again this has been a very meaningful part of not only my teaching, but as well as the students learning. It's interesting how this has impacted their learning, I have caught some of the students explain to other students about what they know about the ecosystem. That is what learning is all about, making an impact in a child's life. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

  • Go Green With Us

    Funded Mar 25, 2010

Our "Green Day" was such a success thanks to all of your combined support! The students were very excited to start the day learning about conserving energy and helping our environment. Your donations made it easy to go about the day without using paper! The students began their day by painting the collage pots that you have generously donated to us! They also added their own special designs with mosaic tiles. We turned oatmeal containers into gift boxes for the collage pots. Tomorrow, we will be planting flowers in them so that they can bring home a special gift to their mom's for this coming weekend (shh, it's a surprise).

Using the cow magnets left students feeling quite amazed that iron can actually come out of the breakfast cereal known as Total! It was such a great lesson to watch. I have never seen so many different reactions come out of one classroom. All of my students want their own cow magnets to bring home so that they can continue to be scientists and test some other foods that they consume! You have had such an impact on the students and they "can't believe that there are nice people who would donate cool pots and magnets to our classroom"! ”

  • Making Math Easier to Understand

    Funded Jan 30, 2010

Oh, thank you, thank you! I was right! My students have really enjoyed using ALL of the math supplies during our math lessons! It is just so thrilling to watch them use the hands-on manipulatives to help them better understand the many different math objectives we cover in first grade!

Not only have they enjoyed using the number practice writing cards and the markers, but their handwriting has improved across the curriculum! The listening centers have been wonderful-their understanding of money, time and measurement has improved tremendously. The pattern block and attribute cards have helped them to better "see" the shapes and learn how they can manipulate the different ones to then put together and make different shapes. The geometry shapes kits really helped since they had not only a visual to use during our geometrical shapes units but they could also hold, feel and see to count the number of faces, edges and corners geometrical shapes actually have. The storage bins and privacy partitions have also been a great tool for accountability and making sure students know where supplies are kept and returned to once they have finished with them.

Gee, sounds like a lot of information, but I truly do thank you so much for helping my students with learning then applying their math skills. Not only will my current students benefit, but also my students in the future will be able to use these awesome supplies. Feel free to check to see our other proposals I have written for donorschoose.org-what a wonderful idea for teachers everywhere! I truly hope you have a wonderful weekend and from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU! ”

  • Read with Me

    Funded Dec 4, 2009

My teaching partner and I cannot express enough gratitude to you for your generous donations to our project. We are thrilled that you felt our program, "Read With Me," was worth your donations, and that it is now a reality instead of an idea.

We are striving to help our students become successful readers, filled with excitement and eagerness to learn new things. By inviting parents/guardians to join their children in developing a love for reading, we are opening a world of new opportunities for both our students and their guardians. They love coming to our program, and seem to really be enjoying the variety of books that you enabled us to provide them.

Thanks again for believing in us and our program, and for giving us the support that we needed to get "Read With Me" up and running. We cannot wait to see the joy on the faces of our students as they realize how much fun reading can be!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Julie Thomas

  • Crafty Second Graders Need Art Aupplies!

    Funded Jan 29, 2010

Hello! I cannot thank you enough for choosing my project to fund. It was like having Christmas in Spring when your package arrived. As I mentioned in my proposal, my school district, like most others in the Bay Area, has faced huge budgets cuts, and we only expect things to be further cut next year. Art is one of those areas that is first to be cut. While my school is fortunate to get the basics (paint, crayons, color pencils, and construction paper) we do not have funds to buy other items that kids love using when doing arts and crafts.

I make sure to do art once a week with my second graders. They were beyond excited to learn we received new supplies. They loved the variety of colors of the oil pastels, did not know construction paper could have glitter, and like having a safe place to dry their art, instead of laying it out on a counter or the floor (to name a few). We have already begun to use the supplies, which you will see in my photos, and the kids have already started requesting projects. Your art supplies have sparked the creative minds that exist in my classroom. Today's kids are under a lot of academic pressure, and they very much look forward to art, where they can relax, have fun, and produce something to be proud of. I am sure you will see how excited they are when you read their letters.

What is also great about your supplies that you donated is that there are enough to last me until next school year as well. So you will be affecting the lives of many second graders.

    Thank you again.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chalfant

  • Challenging Literature for My Eager Students!

    Funded Nov 21, 2009

Thank you so much for your thoughtful donation to my school. It is so encouraging and heartwarming to know that there are total strangers out there who are willing to give money to my classroom and my students. Besides the direct effects of the donated items themselves, the effect of the donation is staggering: my students now truly believe that there are people out there in the world who will help them and who care about them. While this may not be news to all high school students, mine have gotten the opposite message for most of their lives, so it is astounding for them when they realize that they are cared for.

In particular the donation of these books has really made an impact on my small program. The students are into the story, much more than they would have been if we had to read off of old photocopies or if we were sharing books. The students all bought in to the process more readily and believed that the books were worth reading because you had thought they were worth donating. In particular, students are enjoying Of Mice&Men and are continuously asking if we can keep reading even after the bell has rung.

Again, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for your donations. I know that in an economy as difficult as this, it is easy to forget the power that a few dollars can have in the hands of educators; Donorschoose.org has repeatedly shown that small donations can make a huge difference. I deeply appreciate the gift of your hard-earned money for my students. They are incredibly grateful and so am I.”

  • Self Expression and Exploration Through Art

    Funded Feb 19, 2010

On behalf of my students and myself I am writing to offer our most sincere thanks for the donations you have made to the art program. Our district is facing some of the most drastic budget cuts ever and so asking for a bigger art budget now or in the near future is literally impossible. However, through your kind and generous donations---the supplies you made possible, the art program at our school will continue to flourish and gain momentum. We cannot thank you enough for your help!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Ramirez

  • Visual Learning for Visual Learners

    Funded Jan 25, 2010

Thank you for your kind and wonderful gifts for our classroom "Visual Learners" project. Ever since we have been able to get the digitizing graphics tablets you have so generously provided, our students have been able to do a much better job of getting their creative ideas into the computer.

The graphics artwork they are doing with the tablets is of very high quality compared to that done with the mouse! The interface is intuitive and students will work for long periods undisturbed when they are comfortable with the equipment. They are able to focus on the work and their art as opposed to fighting to make the technology do what they want it to. Their satisfaction with the output encourages them to continue and work even harder.

I hope you will be able to take a little time to see some of the work they have done in the Introduction to Animation and 3D class at Independence High School this year. I have posted their work on the Donors Choose web site to give you a general idea of what they are capable. The program is in its second year now, and we are attracting better and better students as others see examples of the work posted on the walls around the room and in the halls.

One of our students was able to create an entry for a nationwide ACT poster contest this year. We also had three entries for the Fulton County Media Festival this year – passing our previous best of one entry. One of these entries secured a "Superior" award, and will move on to the state competition. While all of these events aren't directly products of the graphics tablets you provided, the availability of the right resources encourages the students to compete and not feel that they will be at a disadvantage relative to students at other schools. As you may be aware, our school is an alternative school and sometimes doesn't get the resources other larger traditional schools are funded with. If our students think they don't have competitive tools to work with, they won't be willing to put their best efforts into projects.

Next year, when the format of our courses switches over to fixed length mini-mesters, students who are interested in the animation and 3D subject matter won't be in any hurry to complete the assignments hastily. This will, I predict, result in a much improved work product and extensive use of the graphics tablets to produce this work. I am looking forward to seeing the results and hope to have a very large number of entries in the various competitions and contests going forward.

Thank you all so much for your wonderful contributions! People such as yourselves deserve a great deal of credit for your willingness to support education of our young people. So many people talk about the need for better education today, but you are certainly among an elite group of concerned citizens who are willing to try to do something to solve the educational problems we face in this country.

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Nicholson
