  • Our Lives: Autobiographies Through Digital Photos

    Funded Sep 18, 2010

Along with my students, I humbly give thanks for your donation that provided us with our 4 digital cameras. From the moment we received them in the mail, they have brought interest and excitement to our classroom and, for the students, have given a different meaning to telling their "story."

We most frequently use the cameras to document our field trip experiences. So far, we have gone to the Academy of Arts where students were able to take pictures of their hands-on experiences as well as document the pieces of art that they saw. Just this past week, students used the cameras to document a piece of living history when we visited the Arizona Memorial and Battleship Missouri. Having these cameras available will allow my students to remember these moments their entire life. We also recently took a field trip to a hotel in the area where students learned about possible future careers. It was here that students could photograph things that interested them.

Students also frequently use the cameras during school hours during school activities like our Halloween parade, our Drug Free day, and next week, during our Christmas program. We have begun to teach students to integrate these pictures into iMovie to create slideshows and to insert pictures into PowerPoint presentations. My students are so engaged and are enjoying themselves immensely!

I cannot begin to describe how far your donation will go towards engaging my students and helping them to document their lives. They are all so grateful, as am I, and want you to know that you have truly made an impact in our lives. Thank you again for your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

  • Put The Drama Kids In The Spotlight! Part 2

    Funded Oct 2, 2010

Thank you so much for your support of this project and of our theater program. Your donation has enabled us to purchase a second spotlight for use with our two shows each year, as well as with other programs in our school, including choir concerts, talent show, etc. Prior to this, we had to rent spotlights for every program, resulting in a great expense. This money could have been, and will now be able to be, used for other needs, including costumes, makeup, sets, royalties, etc. Furthermore, having our own spotlights means that we are not at the mercy of sometimes unreliable equipment, and a limited window in which we are able to rehearse with the equipment. By having our own spotlights, we are able to train students in their use throughout the year, making them more skilled technicians, giving them skills that they will be able to take with them as they move forward in their work in the arts.

Thank you again for your support. Your help is greatly appreciated!”

  • With A Song In Their Hearts And An Instrument In Their Hands

    Funded Jun 17, 2010

I cannot express to you the full impact of your generous donations. The students have been deeply affected by the ability to put a variety of instruments in their hands and to begin to understand what it is to be a musician. The rhythm instruments that you purchased for them have deeply enriched their curriculum and provided a creative release from their days of sitting at desks. It's allowed them to get out of their head and put learning into their bodies. For our third graders they have been given a great coming of age experience. They have each received a recorder of their own that they must take care of and practice on. This is grooming them to play other instruments and through this program they are learning to read music and understand how to control their creative expression. When our students walk in the music room and see all of the things they can play their eyes light up with excitement and they ask to use everything. Their curious minds begin to unfold and their imagination opens up. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing us to have this experience.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sanderson

  • Practice Makes Perfect! Help Us Take Our Violins Home!

    Funded Oct 1, 2010

Thank you so much for your support! The day the materials arrived, they were immediately put to use. Students took turn opening the boxes their new violins came in and reviewed the different parts of the instrument as it was prepared to play.

After taking the violins out of the box, we used them to practice how to correctly stand as violinists. Each student took a turn placing their feet in the correct position, raising the instrument to their shoulder, and plucking the strings. If the student did it correctly the first time, they got a round of applause. If they made a mistake, they received encouraging corrections from their classmates until they, too, held the instrument correctly. In violin class, students strive to work together, encouraging each other to be the best they can be!

After everyone was standing correctly, we played a game called "Ball on Board!" In this game, students work in pairs as they practice holding their violins up "tall and proud!" If their violin is tall and proud, a little rubber ball will balance correctly on their strings. If they are not holding their violin up correctly, the ball will roll off!

Thank you for supporting my classroom and believing in the transformative power of music! ”

  • Help Us Put On A School-Wide Vampire Hip-Hopera!

    Funded Jun 10, 2010

Thank you so very much for your generous donations! The headless microphone set is going to absolutely change the theatre program at my new public school. The vampire Hip-Hopera is going to put my small school on the map! Since it is student written production, I am so excited to be able to present the students with such high-tech theater technology that they are not used to being presented with.

Last year, the Romeo and Juliet play didn't even have microphones, and the students had to shout to be heard in the audience. This year, we are going to blow the audience away!”

  • Creativitiy Could Blossom In This Kindergarden

    Funded Sep 1, 2010

Words can simply not express the joy your donation has brought to my classroom. As I mentioned before, our district is in a severe budget crisis. This year we were not even going to get any construction paper. I have been so worried about how I would be able to provide these materials on a teacher's salary. My students come from extreme circumstances and I was devastated to think that my students would have to do without again. We are using these materials to allow them to express their amazing spirits.Allowing them to take risks and create something beautiful to them. Without your help, none of this would have been possible.

Thank you so much for your generosity and for allowing me to foster creativity in these exceptional children.”

  • Drummers Needing Drums

    Funded Mar 17, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous donations. You have created an infectious excitement in my band. The percussion section can't wait to finish acquiring the entire drum line. I will make sure that the drum is treated with the best of care. This will ensure that it can be used for many many years to come.

The size of the drum line is going to double from 2009 to 2010.You have played a major part in this growth. We are going to be performing a disco show this Fall. The songs will include YMCA, Play That Funky Music, The Hustle, and Lets Groove. We are going all out with 70s colorguard uniforms and tied dye flags.

I hope to use the excitement that you have created in the band to spread spirit throughout the entire school. The school has needed a boost and this may be the spark that lights the fire. Thank you again for your contributions.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Ingram

  • The Power Of Portfolios

    Funded Oct 27, 2009

I can't fully express my joy, excitement, and appreciation for your donation to my project. It is great to see that you share my vision for reaching children. In writing, children so often write for an assignment and then toss the writing piece in the trash once they receive their graded work back. The writing portfolios in my classroom will encourage students to be proud of their accomplishments in writing and show them the growth they make throughout the school year.

I am so grateful for your support of my classroom. Your contributions to my project have allowed my students to have beautiful writing portfolios to showcase their writing talents throughout the year. Without your support, projects like this one would never come to fruition.

My students are so excited about pulling out their writing portfolios to share with classroom visitors. Their writing pieces have stayed organized all year! In the past, so many high quality writing sample would be lost.

    Thank you again!”

  • LCD Projector

    Funded Aug 16, 2009

I cannot thank you enough for your generous donation. Having this project fully funded has been a dream come true! Before having our projector, learning in my classroom was very limited and one dimensional. Having this incredible piece of technology at my fingertips has enriched my students' learning immensely.

I have used our projector in all major content areas to enhance the curriculum. I first used it during our study of Brazil. I was able to project websites about Carnival and the Amazon rain forest for the whole class to see. It was amazing to see my students' faces light up as they experienced first-hand, the sights and sounds of a different culture thousands of miles away. We used what we learned from our virtual field trip of the rain forest to build our own rain forest in the classroom. In math, the children were able to see a live animation of how acute, right and obtuse angles are formed. Through the use of these visual animations, a difficult and very abstract concept suddenly became perfectly clear to my little mathematicians. During our study of Egypt, I was able to take my students on another virtual field trip to the Valley of the Kings and inside the tombs of the pyramids. The fun and excitement have been endless!

Currently, my class is working on demonstrating their knowledge of new topics by creating Power Point presentations and Imovies to present to their classmates. We have also been inviting other classes into ours to experience the wide world this technology offers. Our laptop projector has enabled not only my class, but many others throughout my school to see, hear and internalize parts of the world and concepts that they would otherwise not be able to encounter in books.

Thank you again for your kindness and generosity. I hope that you take pride in knowing that you have made an incredible difference in the lives of many less fortunate New York City school children. ”

  • "A Barnyard Moosical"

    Funded Jan 23, 2010

I would like to thank you for the donation you have made to our schools music program. The costumes you funded for our MOOsical helped make the experience a very special one for my students. When I first pulled out the costumes, to show the kids, they were extremely impressed and excited. The glimmer in their eyes was a moment I will not forget and wish you all could've seen it. Afterward, It took me a good twenty minutes to calm them down for dress rehearsal!

Our school's music budget and budget in general is extremely limited. The bright look in my students eyes wouldn't have been possible without your help. My students were able to experience a "real" musical for the first time and I'm sure it is something they will NEVER forget.

Thank you for helping schools across the county obtain the goals that we would not be able to obtain without you.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Haugh
