• Middle School Music Makers: Chorus Students Need a Keyboard!

    Funded Jan 29, 2012

Thank you so much for your generous donation toward purchasing our digital piano. It has been a major boon to my students! Our Middle Grades Chorus uses the piano at every weekly rehearsal. The instrument projects well in the gymnasium with only the on-board speakers. The students are thus able to hear the accompaniment more clearly, and so their singing is in tune. I, as the conductor-accompanist, am also able to play more musically with the touch-sensitive keyboard action, allowing me to provide more musical information to the students while singing. This has proved essential, since I am unable to use my hands to conduct expressively while also playing the piano!

We have also used this instrument for a variety of performances already. It is extremely portable, so I have been able to easily move it between our two school buildings. (You may recall that our school suffered a fire a few years ago and so we are housed on two different campuses.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Epstein

  • Getting Our Creative Juices Flowing

    Funded Jan 14, 2012

Wow, my students and I love the set of DVDs , Songs in the Key of Art. I've used them to introduce new artists, color theory and other cool songs connecting with Art. As I play the DVD, I have prints by the particular artist, which includes, Klee, Pollack, Gaugin, O'Keeffe, Monet, Escher, Michelango, Cezanne, Warhol, Matisse, Da Vinci, Mondrian Calder, Kahlo, Grandma Moses, Kandinsky, that the song is about posted on the board. The prints generate lots of questions from my students. They are learning about artists that are not covered in my lessons and covered in my lessons. This is a great way to include introductions to lots of artists. The DVDs also include a Clean Up Anthem, and songs about the Elements and Principals of Art.

My kids in particular enjoyed the songs "Picasso Polka" and "Bad Day In the Art Room".

I am now using these DVDs to review what they have learned this year, as they listen to the songs about complementary colors, shapes, symmetry, primary and secondary colors, and tints and shades.

Thank you for your generous donation. My kids are learning and having lots of fun as they listen to all the songs about Art.”

    Ms. Lambert

  • Can I Click It? Yes, You Can!

    Funded Jan 29, 2012

I wanted to thank you for your generous donation to my classroom. Over 150 students have been impacted by your kindness. The Samsung Galaxy Tablet that was purchased has been used as a mobile history resource center. Many students have benefited from being able to watch recordings of my PowerPoint lectures they may have missed or not understood the first time around. Students also utilize the tablet to view primary sources, listen to historical video clips, conduct historical research during class debates, and to create mobile Prezi presentations.

Thank you once again for your help in transforming my classroom during these difficult economic times.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Jocz

  • Just Dance

    Funded Dec 16, 2011

My class and I want to thank each and every one of you for helping us get our ipod boom box and pencil sharpener. Thanks to our access to music now we can continue with our dance lessons during P.E. and practice for our upcoming schoolwide program in June. Not only do we have tunes to dance to but when we are working on our writing we play classical music and the students really like it. As soon as we start writing they ask for the music. We also have nice, sharp pencils on hand thanks to our class sharpener. (My students used to have to wait for me to go to our supply room to sharpen them).

These may seem like simple things, but they have made a big difference to us. Music is such an important part of our lives and now that we have access to it all the time it just makes us happier. I have now become their official dance teacher and I'm glad I can keep them moving.

We are so lucky to have this site helping us out! As teachers we buy a lot of the resources we need ourselves and with our paychecks shrinking every year, that has gotten harder to do. In a time of need it is truly a blessing to have a site like Donors Choose and people who are willing to help. Thank you from the bottom of our little-music-loving hearts!”

  • Learning to Celebrate Diversity

    Funded Mar 14, 2012

Thank you so very much for your generous gift. I do not think I can find the right words to adequately express the wonderful effect this project is having on my students.

The civil rights and diversity materials you have provided for my students has helped them discover we are all unique and special. The materials have also lead them into a learning journey of empathy and understanding.

Your thoughtfulness and kindness will be remember every time I have a lesson for my students, using the materials you have provided. Thank you.”

  • We've Got the Beat! - Using Music Groups to Combat Bullying

    Funded Feb 3, 2012

My students and I wish to express our deepest appreciation for your kind and generous donation in support of our recent project. In today's society, it is imperative for teachers and students alike to be aware of signs and examples of bullying. The books you enabled us to secure, "Bullying in Schools" and "A School Like Mine," provide a wealth of information aimed at identifying specific behaviors and responding appropriately in different and difficult situations. My students are also embracing a variety of places and ways students engage in learning around the globe, supporting the theme of celebrating diversity. Finally, your provision of the laptop as well as other resources have allowed my students the opportunity to strengthen our schools' character Ed/Anti Bullying campaign. This in turn helps them to become strong and self-sufficient members of our society. I am committed to developing the theme of Strength in Unity, and your charitable contribution has been a key factor in making this possibility a reality. Thank you for caring about our students - our future”

  • Students' Names in Lights

    Funded Oct 23, 2011

I just wanted to update you on the impact of your donation to fund the project for my students to be able to get their hands on technology. We received the three cameras and have been using them on a weekly basis to create videos that represent lessons based on the common themes found in literature. Some students chose good vs. evil or the prevalence of revenge and others are representing jealousy or betrayal. I even have one group that's focusing on a positive theme ;) (finding someone that was long lost...)

The students are being stretched creatively to represent themes with symbolism and action out of their own minds, so thank you. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Mendes

  • Freedom of Expression

    Funded Dec 16, 2011

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your generous donations to my project Freedom of Expression. I can't tell you how excited the students are to be creating their own books. Students seem more vested in the quality of their work. They have been busy writing poems and short stories. Before the end of the year is out, students will write an autobiographical essay about how they have changed over the year. Our history teacher is planning on having them create a timeline of historical events from this school year.

I have to admit that the most exciting part for the students is the "Yearbook" section. Because of budget cuts, we will not have a yearbook to offer our students this year. I decided to let them have a section of the book to publish their own yearbook - complete with pictures and autographs. I can't wait until the end of the year when we can put them together.

Thank you for thinking of my kids!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Barger

  • Music Makes the World go Around

    Funded Jan 31, 2012

Thank you donors for your generous giving on behalf of my Kindergarten students. The students are enjoying the musical instruments tremendously. Their favorite instruments are the triangles and the two drums. They found it fascinating to learn that part of the drum comes from cow raw-hide! They are also intrigued by some of the multicultural instruments like the guiro. We are using the instruments to study rhythm and beats in songs, as well as just playing along to their favorite nursery rhymes.

Your giving has allowed my students to experience music hands-on. They can now make music and appreciate it from a different point of view. Their own! These instruments will have an even deeper impact on young children as they will be used to provide many future generations of students with a love and an appreciation of music.

Thank you again for supporting such a wonderful organization like Donors Choose. ”

    Mrs. Galdamez

  • Spotlight On Music Interactive Listening Maps

    Funded Oct 19, 2011

First let me say that my students have loved the Spotlight On Music Listening Maps that your generous donation has funded. I hope you take a moment to look at the pictures of my students using the listening maps. In the first two pictures we are using "steering wheels" and driving our cars through the country while listening to Woody Guthrie's "Car Song." In the next two pictures we are listening to Vivaldi's Four Seasons- Fall. After listening to this song we had lots of fun pretending to rake leaves and throwing them up into the air. Then students learned a scale song on the xylophones. We played a major C scale from high to low while singing "Down, down, yellow and brown, the leaves are falling over the town." Students that were not playing the xylophones sang the song and made their leaves dance from the trees to the ground.

These listening maps were shown to music teachers in the district and our district is looking into purchasing these for all the elementary music teachers in our district. Not only are the Listening Maps a wonderful tool show students how to listen for different elements of music they are also full of wonderful music that students should be exposed to. Thank you so much for your generous donation to our project. You are helping to create a community of life-long music makers. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Swedberg
