  • Listen Up! (Part 2)

    Funded Sep 20, 2009

Thank you so much for the resources for our listening center! My student and I love pulling out these materials and thinking of the donors who make learning more fun for our classroom.

The resources have helped many of my students gain important literacy skills. One of their favorite activities has been using movable pieces to imitate the story as they listen along. They request to hear their favorites every day and ask to be the storytellers. I notice my students' ability to retell and comprehend what they read become strengthened as they listen to the books on CD provided to us through your generous donation!

My class also loves hearing their favorite songs. The song cards you helped purchase enable my students to follow the words being sung on the CD. I have many English language learners in my classroom who learn best through the safety of a group song. I see their vocabulary and confidence increase as they learn and memorize favorite nursery rhymes and songs.

Thank you once again for helping my students receive these engaging materials. We love them and use them every day.

You will always be an important part of our classroom community! ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sarah

  • 6th Grade Artists Dream of Painting

    Funded Sep 20, 2009

It has been such a pleasure to have these incredible resources in our classroom! We have been focusing a lot on integrating the arts within math and science, so I provided some pictures of recent projects that we have worked on in which your support has been vital.

Our first unit in sixth grade science centers on plate tectonics theory and developing an understanding of the internal forces (like convection currents in the mantle) that shape the surface of the Earth, so students created models to explain how plate movements have shaped various regions. They were thrilled to be able to use the tempura paints, paint brushes, paint bowls, and paper to create colorful, detailed, accurate and informative models, which they presented to each other in class and shared with our school community.

Our second unit in sixth grade science centers on weathering and erosion, which helps students explore the external forces (like water, wind, and gravity) that shape the surface of the Earth. Students created watercolor paintings of mountain ranges of their choice, which we used as a tool to activate prior knowledge when considering what causes mountains and the land around them to change over time. It was amazing to see how many factors they were able to come up with from this experience and how invested they were in developing their pieces.

Thank you again so much for your generous contribution and the support you have provided to engage students in learning! These materials will continue to be used throughout this year and in years to come - so your kind donation is affecting an incredible number of students now and in the future!”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher

  • Make Flipping Out Fun, Let's FLIP Toward The Future!

    Funded Oct 6, 2009

Thank you again for your kind donation to our classroom. My class has truly loved the opportunity to start using the Flip Cameras. We have used the cameras to record our first set of videos. So far the class is learning the different parts of a stage and how to speak to an audience. We are excited to use the cameras in the classroom the rest of the school year.

I have noticed that when the students were given the chance to express themselves they were able to come to life in ways they usually don't at school.Being able to listen to and see themselves acting on camera has given them increased determination and confidence.I can't wait to watch them grow and learn with these new materials. They are "FLIPPING" into their future with confidence. I can't thank you enough! :)”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. LYON

  • Hear the Rhythms of the World!

    Funded Sep 21, 2009

I so appreciate your donation to my drum project. They were so excited when I pulled them out! "I want that one! I want that one!" They are engaging students who have never been interested in music before and never participated in my class. The "tough" 8th grade boys are now telling the class to be quiet because they want to hear the instructions.

The drums are not simple to use so they are very attentive when I explain the different techniques. They are focused on playing the instruments just how I play it. The 7th and 8th graders have played a groove from Guinea and another from West Africa. They can play in two parts now! They learned right away that it is not all about them, but the entire class creating music together. This is an idea I hope they apply to other areas of their life as well as drumming.

I am having the 7th grade play a drum groove for the school at the black history assembly. I also want some students to accompany the choir on a song. Everyone is going to think it is just the coolest thing they've seen. I don't think the school ever did anything like this before.

The drums are giving the students new ways to express themselves through music and learn more about the world they live in.

    You made it happen!

    Thank you again!

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Parker

  • We Want to Throw Our Clay!

    Funded Aug 16, 2009

I wish to thank all of the donors who contributed to the pottery wheel that I now have in my art room. It has been a great addition to our resources when working with clay. The students who have had the opportunity to learn about the wheel and use the wheel to make a project had a wonderful and positive art experience on the wheel. Those who are awaiting their turn to give it a try can hardly wait! Having this pottery wheel gives me the chance to provide an experience for my students that they may not get anywhere else. I have enjoyed giving them this experience, and especially enjoyed the support that my students are showing each other as they take their individual turns on the wheel. The throwing center in my classroom is here to stay and we will be utilizing the wheel for years to come. Thank-you once more for your generous support to my art class through Donors Choose. ”

  • What Made the Music Stop?

    Funded Oct 25, 2009

In early November I received a message from Donorschoose.org. I could not believe that my request was filled in just over a month. A week later the laptop computer arrived at school. Since then I have used the computer in the classroom for a number of things. It has helped me with administrative work such as typing letters for students to bring home to their parents to actually accompanying our chorus rehearsals with its music software. I am now able to use our schools wireless connection to get on-line and use the Department Of Education website to do data research as well as find materials to help me be a better music teacher.

At the beginning of this year I was asked to teach general music classes as well as our performing groups. This is something I had not done for a few years so I was a little uneasy getting back into it. I am happy to say that finding resources, pictures and musical examples could not be easier thanks to the computer. Whether it's lessons about the orchestra, classical composers or modern day music, our computer has helped me find current and useful information right away. This has helped to make me a more efficient and effective teacher

When our performance students saw the new computer they were very excited. They knew that we could update our way of working and bring more musicality and energy to what we do. Most recently, we have used our new computer to assist us with our holiday shows. We started to use it in the classroom during rehearsals and it helped us to realize that we can also use it in performances. The music software has made it possible for our students to perform in our school's auditorium with full musical arrangements to support them. As a teacher, I can see that their confidence and ability has already started to increase. It has also opened up new possibilities in that the music we perform is no longer limited to just what can be played on a piano but rather can be expanded to anything we can create using our music studio software or find on the Internet. It has truly brought our vocal classroom into the twenty first century.

I can now look into using the computer with my piano students. Being a piano teacher for over fifteen years, I look forward to being able to record my students and have them listen back to themselves. This will be a great assessment tool and will help students learn and improve their playing. All of our classroom pianos are computer compatible so we are not far from achieving this goal. The computer has brought growth to our entire music program. What I teach and how I teach it has been positively affected.

Please believe me when I say how truly grateful I am for your donation. The fact that you found my proposal and believed in what I was asking for means the world to me.

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Vicelich

  • Teacher, Can You Hear Me?

    Funded Oct 6, 2009

Thank you again for your generous contribution to my donorschoose project. The tape recorders you helped purchase have been a huge help. My students each had the chance to take one home, record their practice sessions and submit their tapes to me for a grade. The results were more than impressive. It was so nice for me as their director to get the chance to hear each student play individually. I was able to address certain weaknesses that I hadn't noticed before.

The pictures I've attached were taken at our Winter Concert. I hope you can see in the photos how confident the students were before and during their performances. They all knew that they sounded good because they had the opportunity to listen to themselves and -- with my guidance --- correct any problem areas in their playing.

The audiences certainly noticed. Parents, teachers and alumni were all in agreement that this was the best Winter Concert they can remember at my school. What a great compliment to the children for all their hard work.

Thank you again for your support of music education. Please continue to support other projects on donorschoose. This is such a great resource for us teachers... Especially within the Arts.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Salyers

  • Second Year Drama, Bringing Down the House!

    Funded Aug 24, 2009

I cannot being to express the impact your donation has had on my class. My students are blossoming into a group of focused and motivated artists. We have already been able to attend 3 different competitions this year and we are working steadily toward creating a production for the community. My students will also compete at the county fair this year, representing our school for the first time in over a decade!

It warms my heart to see these students believing in themselves and developing into strong and confident young adults. Having a focused and structured textbook from which to teach them drama has been indispensable this year. I also think it has greatly affected my teaching style and abilities.

Again, I thank you for your donations and assure you that they have gone to good use. Your generosity is priceless in the lives of my students. I hope that some day, although you may not know it, you will be able to see them perform and they will affect your lives the way you have affected theirs!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown

  • Help Us Keep The Beat!

    Funded Sep 15, 2009

Thank you so much for funding the drum pads that our percussion class needs! These make it possible for the students to work on their playing skills at a reasonable volume, which is very important as we are giving instructions. We use them nearly every day.

This is a new class for us and the students are making good progress. Most of the students never had a music class before taking it, and offering drums enables us to reach students who might not sign up to play other instruments. I hope to keep some of the students playing by having them join the band when they are ready.

The students and I are very grateful for your donation, and I hope you will continue to support music in the schools.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. F.

  • Nature Sketching & Journaling

    Funded Aug 31, 2009

With the help of many incredibly generous donors, our project has been fully funded and I am so excited to get our project underway! This year's class is a very diverse and creative group that prove to have a wonderful dynamic that is conducive to some truly creative and in-depth learning experiences. By providing them the opportunity to explore our nearby wildlife area with sketchbooks and art utensils in hand, your donations are going to allow for a wondrous learning opportunity that will have an impact that will hopefully be lifelong.

I will be sharing our experience with student families and my colleagues via our classroom Web page and collaboration in hopes of encouraging further opportunities for exploration of natural resources and greater expression and learning through fine arts. Thank you so much for contributions. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. B.
