  • Without Supplies How Can They Learn?

    Funded Sep 2, 2009

Thank you so much! It is truly amazing to see so many people that want to help out schools in need! My students work very hard. I can help to supply then with some supplies, but more is needed to keep them going all year. Thanks to your donation my students were able to get brand new pencils, paper, hi-liters, and glue! Supplies run out, and usually I end up spending out of pocket! I am so appreciative that this year I was able to give my kids all of the supplies they need to be successful all year long! Thanks again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Buchanan

  • Living in a World of Color

    Funded Sep 1, 2009

Your donations to my project, "Living in a World of Color," have meant so much to my students and me. We have enjoyed making many wonderful projects to support our curriculum, as well as have a much more colorful classroom to work in!

Near Halloween time, we read a story called The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything. After reading the story, we made pumpkin scarecrows just like the one found at the end of the story. Turkeys were made in the classroom at Thanksgiving time. Students traced their hands and feet on different colored paper and made turkey glyphs. At Christmas time, we made Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer hats using our hands as the antlers and, of course, a bright red circle nose. Santa Claus masks were also made. We wore these costumes as we went caroling throughout our school. After winter break, we read Snowmen at Night. Each child tore colored papers and designed their own snowman or snow"woman".

I have made many visuals and signs in the classroom to support student learning. The colors that I have been able to use are much more appealing to students and grab their attention more than regular white copy paper. We have had so much fun using the construction paper that your donations allowed me to purchase. I could not have done all of this without your help. Thank you for making a difference in the life of a teacher and her students! ”

  • Classroom Library in the Music Classroom (Part 1)

    Funded Aug 26, 2009

Thank you for all of our new books! You all gave our classroom library the jump-start that it needed. Before these books arrived, I was storing all our books in a single bin. Now I have six bins and have them sorted by topic. The classroom library is now a prominent part of my classroom (and my instruction). Even other teachers have commented on how nice it is for the music classroom to have a book collection. Several teachers have borrowed books from my new collection to use for read-alouds during their own literacy lessons. That means that while students are working on their literacy skills, they are also learning about music beyond the walls of my classroom!

The students were excited to have new books on new topics to read! (Especially when I have to be absent; No more boring worksheets!) They also like that the books are part of the accelerated reader program. (That means they can earn points towards different prizes by passing online quizzes over these books.) These books have helped to add another dimension to my lessons.

    Thank you so very much!”

  • New Band Instruments for Beginning Band Program

    Funded Aug 30, 2009

What a year it has been so far!!! Your donations have enabled me to start a fledgling band program at my school which I hope will increase music literacy at my school and offer opportunities to the students that will follow them after they leave elementary school and head to middle school. The band instruments are the perfect motivator for my students in 3rd and 4th grade to read music while learning the recorder flute. In addition, for the younger grades, seeing band instruments in the classroom reinforces the concepts they are learning about different tonal colors.

My music program is based on music literacy. Music programs across the country are being cut all the time. I believe this is because people who analyze and make decisions based on the test scores, do not value the correlation between the music literacy and increased math and literacy skills. My school has a very high rate of English Language Learners, but I am in the glorious position of teaching them a language where the symbols on the music staff in an American song, are read and played the same way as symbols on the music staff in a Spanish song. Once they understand the decoding concepts of pitch letters, rhythm values, and fingering they are ready to look at a piece of sheet music, write out any of the pitches, rhythms, or fingerings they have not internalized yet, and read and play the music on recorder flute. Those students who excel on reading music notation are invited to join band.

Currently, the band census, is small, but I anticipate the numbers growing as more and more students master the skills on the recorder flute. The technical ability to play band instruments is much more difficult then recorder flute, and it was very satisfying for me to see that moment when my band students understood why I put so much emphasis on music literacy to be in the band, considering how much trouble they were having with technique. Your donations have greatly increased the chances that I will have at least 70 percent of the student population musically literate within 3 years. I am also discussing with my administration tracking certain 3rd grade students who have had music since 1st grade and are on the path to achieving music literacy, to see how their city and state test scores compare to those students who don't achieve music literacy. I thank all of you again for your generosity in helping to achieve this common vision. ”

  • Got Guh...Guh...Guitars?

    Funded Sep 25, 2009

On behalf of my students and their parents I would like to thank you for the fantastic great looking guitars. These guitars have nylon strings that make beautiful sound. The fine quality wood also contributes to the wonderful music that the students play.

The kids are exhilarating to have guitars to share with their partners. They started the music lessons a few days ago. Boy, they already created their own songs with familiar tunes like "Bingo" and "Apples and Bananas" They incorporated spelling words into rhymes and lyrics to make learning more fun. I'm sure that as the children move along with their music learning they will develop patience and empathy toward one another. They're trained to provide positive feedback as well as working in pairs to make their own products.

Thank you so much for making this dream of mine come true and giving so many students joys and inspirations for future music learning. Who knows, one day one of them will become another "Adam Lambert". We can only do our parts of supporting, guiding, and encouraging students.”

    With gratitude,

  • Reluctant Readers Need Inspired!

    Funded Sep 10, 2009

Thank you very much for your gracious, kind gift of contributing to my reluctant readers! We have been reading the books and the students love the particular books provided by your generosity! Teenage students tend to be hesitant to read, therefore, it is vital that they are introduced to inspiring novels which they can relate to their personal lives. As a teacher, it a very meaningful, moving moment to see reluctant readers engaged in literature. Several of the students have commented on how much they are enjoying these novels. One student admitted that it matters what genre you read. He actually said that reading is not so bad! Isn't that amazing? I cannot express my overwhelming appreciate for you and your desire to help young people read. It means the world to me and to my students. Thank you and God bless you for your kindness.”

  • Art Must Be Seen

    Funded Aug 12, 2009

Thank you for making teaching, creating, and sharing easier in my class, grade level, and whole school. We all benefited. With your generous donation of a beautiful, sturdy, costly display case that has been placed in a main traffic area of our school, the students I work with are proud of the projects we put into the case. They are more willing to spent time and their effort creating visual art, sculpture, and dioramas because they cannot be destroyed by their peers and they are given the proper protection and lighting. Plus this has been positive for our community relations. When parents visit our school they can see a variety of projects from their students.

Since the beginning of school we have displayed our collections of 100+ knitted hats for a service learning project, sculpture, 3D Dioramas and Geometric Figures using our math topics, Trepunta, Stain Glass Watercolors, and many other visual arts. I am very grateful for this case which will be used for many years to come.”

  • We Need Equipment to Play Music!

    Funded Aug 20, 2009

Thank you for your generous donation. Before we obtained these metronomes and IPOD docking station we had only one metronome for the whole class and we could not listen or use contemporary music. Today, we use the metronomes on a daily basis. Students can take a metronome with them into a practice room and we still have enough for students to use in class. This is a huge change and has made for a much more engaging music class.

Thank you for your donation. Our district and state are looking at making cuts to education that may impact our ability to deliver services in the future. However, because we were able to obtain these materials through DonorsChoose, I am no longer worried about having an undersupplied classroom in the future. Thank you.”

  • Ballet is for Me!

    Funded Sep 3, 2009

Your generous donations allowed us to purchase two ballet barres. Our program started with twelve boys and girls in the fourth grade. We will resume ballet classes next week after a long winter break. I wish that the photos better demonstrated the glow of pride and accomplishment that I see on their faces as these students go through each lesson. They work hard and feel special; most attempt to practice what they learn at home.

Additionally, your generosity has been contagious! A local junior high school agreed to donate 18 pairs of ballet slippers for our students when they learned of the program. And we are currently exploring the possibility of finding scholarship money for two of the students to continue studying ballet this summer in local studios.

Thank you so much for opening the door for my students and providing a unique opportunity for growth. The students have asked to perform in our annual talent show in front of the school in May and we will continue growing and teaching in the coming years. You have truly touched my heart and the lives of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Calder

  • Toot A Toot With Us!- Part 1

    Funded Sep 1, 2009

I cannot express to you how much this donation of recorders has impacted my students. Last year I did not have enough recorders until January. this year, because of your generous donation I was able to begin our recorder journey in September.

Since we have been able to begin our recorder playing in September as opposed to January the students learning has increased by leaps and bounds. They are way ahead of my classes last year and have become very proud of themselves.

Without your donation I am not sure we would have had enough recorders to go around. Thank you for making a music class an enjoyable and exciting experience for all of my students.”

    With gratitude,
