It is with PURE EXCITEMENT that I am participating in Mustaches for Kids. That's right, for the next four weeks, I will be subjecting myself to public humiliation and private doubt by growing what will no-doubt be a ridiculous looking Mustache. In order to justify this endeavor I need your support. Last year those who donated(basically a phantom donor and my dad) brought excitment to the faces of a lot of little kids. In order to justify this endeavor I need your support. Last year those who donated(basically a phantom donor and my dad) brought excitment to the faces of a lot of little kids. Sadly I was voted as one of the Worst stache's last year, but I have been training all year for this.
Please sponsor my Mustache by picking a classroom project from the list below to support. And wish me and my Mustache luck. (By the way, DonorsChoose.org is a 501(c)3 charity. See below for approvals from Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau.) hide
The laptop we were given as a result of all your kindness and generosity has changed the mood in my classroom. Students are excited to learn, and are asking MORE and MORE questions, knowing that we are able to use technology to find an answer.
Students have been able to type mother's day poems and letters, research the Holocaust and even watch videos on whaling. The students enjoy using the computer to find information on important people in our history.
Our class is currently working on a biography writing assignment, and we have looked up everything from Mozart's birthday to famous Einstein quotes. One of my students even entered a district wide essay contest and did all her research and typing on our classroom laptop!
The students have learned not only how to use the computer, but how to be responsible for and around it, as well as how to take it out and put it away. They take ownership and pride in the fact that we have been kindly given the opportunity to access our world.
The students can now experience the world in ways they never imagined. They continue to strive for excellence and you have all made this possible. I cannot thank you enough. From the bottom of all of our hearts, THANK YOU!”
Our book shelf has become such an integral part of our classroom, it is hard to imagine how our class existed before! Every week, we go to the library, pick out new books, and display them on the bookshelf. Students are selecting books of interest and using free time to look at and/or read books independently. The change is extraordinary -- with books visible, students find themselves excited about our daily silent reading. They pick new books to read and are further developing their skills with concepts about print, in addition to engaging with site-word and content-specific texts. WOW!
So often, students with significant disabilities are not given the chance to love and appreciate literature. Even students who cannot read text can love to read and your gift has helped every student in my class share this passion for reading, regardless of their reading level. Thanks to your generous support, I have been able to create a truly literacy-rich classroom, where reading is celebrated, encouraged, and done often!
If you are able to, please check out one of our other projects -- there's always so much more we need to make our classroom even more amazing!”
My students absolutely love their new tag readers. I have never seen students more excited about reading than they are with these new materials. The books that they get to use are among some of my students' favorites. They are able to take control of their own learning and read at their own pace with the assistance of the Tag system.
It is so great to see students try to read on their own and then use the pen to check their reading. There are fun games they can play to assist with comprehension and the books are just so exciting to them! The characters even read their own parts so the stories literally come to life.
I am so excited for my students to become lifelong, independent readers and these books and materials are really helping them get there. Thank you for your generous donations to my classroom!”
Thank you for your generous donations to my project. Without your help, my students would never have these wonderful resources. The students were so excited when the box arrived in the mail and couldn't wait for me to put the new blocks at the centers.
The blocks have been a great way to teach important social skills. We have already discussed how to share, how to work together, and how to solve conflicts. The students have used the magnetic building tiles to make three dimensional shapes. The Lego people make it so much more fun for the students to build at the Lego table. The wooden numbers and the wood blocks make a great new block center. The rainbow design blocks are colorful and allow for much creativity.
I greatly appreciate your support of my project. My classroom will provide an environment that encourages students to use their creativity and imagination. The students will enjoy the materials for many years to come. Thank you! Blessings to you in the work that you do!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Hermsen
