  • Books/Audio Books for Reluctant Readers

    Funded Oct 18, 2010

I would like to convey my most sincerest gratitude for your donation to my classroom. With our district, as well as many others, due to budget cuts forced to find other measures for ensuring students have fantastic inspiring literature to inspire a love for reading. Thanks to donors like yourselves at least students in one school will have access to great literature. The books and the audio book you donated are currently being used for a novel study. The students are enjoying the story immensely and cannot wait to read from the book daily.

This novel lends itself to an array of fantastic lessons. One of which is the making a Facebook page for the main character, Melinda, which my students are currently creating. The author of this book uses figurative language in the most wonderful ways. The main character's humor and life mirror in some ways to my students' lives and we have had many great discussions regarding the topics the novel present.

The audio book is used within the classroom for listening activities. It is also being lent out to those students who have severe reading disabilities and many need to hear the chapters more than once to be able to comprehend the text.

Without your donation my students would not know the joy of having a great work of fiction that they can relate to and on a level they can read.

Thank you for fostering the love of reading in my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ferguson

  • Jammin' Amp For The Jazz Band

    Funded Jun 14, 2010

I cannot begin to tell you how much I appreciate your generosity. The Roland keyboard amp that was donated to us has been able to help our ensembles reach their full potential. We have a bassist and guitar player, and keyboard player in our jazz ensemble and they each can connect to a high quality speaker to be heard, thanks to the amps 4 independent inputs. I am truly blessed to have such an amazing group of students and this project has allowed me to expand upon their creativity. Thank you so much! ”

  • Teen Parent and Child Time

    Funded Sep 8, 2010

Thank you for your generosity with considering to fund our Parent and Child Time. The materials and projects continue to make an impact with our students as we explore learning how to interact with our children. The students have explored the importance of playing with their child, engaging in early literacy, and overall brain development of infants and toddlers.

With the exploration of play time, our students began to see the possibilities of their children by integrating new ideas of play. Through the use of musical instruments, motor skill development tools, and kinesthetic learning, the students learned how to adapt play time as a home activity that can assist their child's development.

In addition, students recorded books to share with their children. The stories implemented variation in tone, level of fluency, and general engagement. The parents will share the digital stories with their children and classmates.

Again, thank you for your kind donation. The impact was immeasurable.”

  • Projector in the Laboratory

    Funded Jul 29, 2010

Thank you so much for the donation of a projector for my chemistry classroom. I now can project my power-points, documents, and videos on the screen.

My students really like the fact that they can view all of these documents in my classroom. It allows for a different avenue of instruction. It allows me to incorporate technology in the classroom.

Again I would like to thank you for this generous donation. My students and myself greatly appreciate this contribution to our school and classroom.”

  • A Fresh Start To The New Year

    Funded Jun 30, 2010

We love the rug that you have helped us obtain through DonorsChoose. It brightens up the classroom and has an extraordinary appeal to the students. All of the icons placed around the globe in the center represent different units that we study throughout the school year. We use it for class meetings, partner work, group work, and for a great place to curl up and read a book. It is large enough to accommodate my entire class and I can't thank you enough for it! It makes it really easy to do demonstrations and helps me save time.

With your help, I can continue to do activities involving colored construction paper. Something that seems so simple is not always easy to obtain for my class. Having the paper at my fingertips allows for me to engage students in a variety of fun filled activities. I love incorporating art activities into the subject areas of math and science. I was beginning to think that alternative ways of teaching certain concepts may be necessary. We are so lucky that you selected our project and that we are able to continue doing the activities that they deserve!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Poirier

  • With A Song In Their Hearts And An Instrument In Their Hands

    Funded Jun 17, 2010

I cannot express to you the full impact of your generous donations. The students have been deeply affected by the ability to put a variety of instruments in their hands and to begin to understand what it is to be a musician. The rhythm instruments that you purchased for them have deeply enriched their curriculum and provided a creative release from their days of sitting at desks. It's allowed them to get out of their head and put learning into their bodies. For our third graders they have been given a great coming of age experience. They have each received a recorder of their own that they must take care of and practice on. This is grooming them to play other instruments and through this program they are learning to read music and understand how to control their creative expression. When our students walk in the music room and see all of the things they can play their eyes light up with excitement and they ask to use everything. Their curious minds begin to unfold and their imagination opens up. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing us to have this experience.”

  • Music Repair Budget Causes Teacher to Take Drastic Measures

    Funded Jun 27, 2010

We just received the repair kit a few days ago; what a blessing it has already been. I have been able to re-cork a saxophone neck, add clarinet pads to three clarinets, and add water keys to countless brass instruments! I can't imagine how much money this will save the music program over the years. I am already scoping out the next repairs to do.

I was a little worried that it took so long to get the repair kit. I believe the company may have been out because so many band directors needed repair kits at the beginning of the school year. Thankfully our kit arrived just in time for our winter concerts. We have a concert for the students' families and the community, two elementary school sing-along concerts, a sing-along concert for our students, and a voluntary trip concert at a local hospital coming up in December. It is nice to know that I have instruments that work with all that going on.

Thank you for supporting our project; it is greatly appreciated!

Thank you, thank you, thank you...”

    Mrs. Batdorf

  • Dancing from the Heart

    Funded Aug 12, 2010

Thank you all so much for your support of the arts in education. Your donations made a huge difference in our marching band program this year.

In large part to the new flags we were able to achieve a Superior rating at our first competition, and a caption in auxiliary (which is the flagline). If you are not familiar with marching band a Superior is the highest rating a band can receive, and a caption is only given to the top group in a given area if the judges feel that one group stood out and really deserved it.

Because of this rating we were eligible to go to State for the first time in almost a decade. This is a huge accomplishment and one that my students will not soon forget. At state they earned a rating of Excellent (the second highest award).

I know that all of this success could not have happened if you had not shown your generosity and helped us get new equipment. Thank you so much you have made a difference to my students lives.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Layton

  • Have a Heart. Keep it Safe.

    Funded Jul 14, 2010

Thank you all for your very generous donations. Your gift is truly the gift of life.

As you can see from the photos, the students are using an anatomical dummy to learn the techniques of CPR and the proper use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). I am a firm believer in the "better safe than sorry" philosophy. I hope never to have to use the AED in any real life or death situation, but I now have peace of mind simply by having an AED on hand- just in case.

Thank you for making child safety a high priority. Thank you for thinking about our students, and for supporting public education and sports in New York City.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Oszust

  • Changing Views: Female Victims

    Funded Aug 20, 2010

Words can not possibly fully express my gratitude to you for your donation of books to my students. Giving students literature to which they can relate and express their views is often trying in public schools. However, my students have sincerely enjoyed reading Speak and We Were the Mulvaneys. They have had the opportunity to read, research, write and debate the topic of rape in society and how it affects the victim and those close to the victims. This unit was a true learning experience for my classes. In the words of one my students, "I am so glad we got to read a book about real life and not some British novel about fragile women who sprain their ankles and have to go to bed for six weeks. These books helped me see that women are strong and that they can overcome the "damsel in distress" role given to them."

You made a tremendous difference in this student's reading experiences and in the education of all my students today and in the future as I continue to use these novels in the years to come. Thank you again for that.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Palombo
