  • Medical School

    Funded Oct 29, 2023

On behalf of me, my students, and their families I would like to sincerely THANK YOU for your funding of our NV Medical School Unit! We have had a rewarding experience thanks to your generous donation which has led to many students more knowledgeable and aware of the biology of their bodies, disease, their own health, and opportunities in the medical field. I even have one student (maybe even 2) who has applied for the CNA Program at Emily Griffith Technical College this summer and is interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare industry, possibly as a nurse!

The hands-on materials we were able to access made a huge difference. For example, students were fully engaged in learning about their own total fitness score using real sphygmomanometers (blood pressure cuffs) in a laboratory you provided. Not only were my students engaged, but the AP level lesson, which was also part of our grant, had my students grappling with and achieving high levels of understanding and reflection, which for my students, who have failed so many classes and ended up at our school, was amazing to see how high level they could go with concepts. Many of my students commented on how they've taken the ideas they learned in class home and shared with family members, especially those with health concerns. One of my students specifically shared about how she was able to help her abuela with her blood pressure issues. For many of my students it was their first time ever conducting a dissection and you could feel the excitement in the room.

'Doctor Burciaga, what do you observe in your specimen's oral cavity?'

Being able to facilitate this Medical School setting allowed me to refer to all my students as, 'Dr. so-and-so' which sounds small, but really turned a regular HS Biology class into something more special and real and the learning reflected this. I had students engaging in high level discussions as 'Doctors' in our post lab debrief of our Infectious Diseases lesson really digging into issues that came up during COVID-19 like mandatory masks and vaccination mandates.

Wow, this has been such a rewarding and impactful experience and I want to again, deeply thank you for allowing me and my students to take this more authentic educational journey. My students learned a lot! This grant has made a real and meaningful imprint on my students and even some of their families.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Touher

  • Nurses Office!

    Funded Jan 1, 2024

Thank you so much for all of your donations. You have no idea how grateful my students and I are! The items received have helped me create a better nurses office for the students in need of coming here. Being ill or hurt is an already scary thing. The #1 item that my students have enjoyed are my anatomy curtains. When they come in here that is the first thing they see and they get to learn while they are in here! Another thing they like to read is the mental health posters. They sit behind me in my desk, which is right in front and I get to see the smile that it brings to students, that might have needed those little extra motivational words. I cannot express my gratitude to donors choose & all of the donors that make all of this possible!”

  • Paging Dr. Firstie

    Funded Oct 29, 2023

Thank you all so much for making this project a success. Unfortunately, it was funded after the room transformation had taken place and we were in another domain. This was the first room transformation that my 2023-2024 students had experienced, and they were amazed when they walked into the room that morning. I heard so many, "This is the best day ever!" comments. Students dressed up like surgeons equipped with gowns, gloves, masks, and caps to perform "surgery".

Each table was set up as a different body system operating room. The supplies were all laid out for them on the operating tables. Next year, when I do this room transformation with the materials sponsored by each of you, students will find their materials prepared in the sanitary pouches on metal trays. They will also have stethoscopes to add to their wardrobe. Using the IV poles, drain packs and tubes, backdrop stand, and hospital backdrop from this project, the classroom will have even more of a hospital feel than this year. Students will also get to take pictures with their doctor ID badges in front of the backdrop.

My first graders loved the room transformation this year, but I know it will be even better and more exciting with everything I will be able to add thanks to kind and generous donors like each one of you.”

  • Provide Better Health Care at Schools

    Funded Oct 29, 2023

Thank you for generous donation. With these new items I am have to write better health reports for students medical documentation that takes place on campus. My students have truly loved listening to their own heart and lung sounds using the stethoscopes. I have been able to establish a rewards system for my diabetic students during their treatment and to choose stickers to personalize their own folders.

This has made great strides in building trust and relationships with students and huge impacts on their understanding by allowing them to use medical instruments, such as the stethoscopes, so they can gain a better understanding and feel more at ease during their procedures.”

  • Organize The Medical Clinic

    Funded Oct 29, 2023

Thank you very much for your generous donations! Your donations have helped the clinic run smoother and allowed help for it to be more organized. When the students need my direct attention now, I know exactly where all my supplies are and can quickly use my computer which allows for easier flow in the clinic.

The laminator and extra supplies for that have been a tremendous help. They have ensured that our papers and documents that are left out are not at risk of becoming soiled or damaged.

We are so very thankful again for your help!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Nurse Rachel

  • Medical Charting in Color

    Funded Oct 29, 2023

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that donated to fund our project. Our Health Science class was in need of a color printer for the classroom. Making a quick copy in black and white may serve the purpose but it that copy is no substitute for one in color that shows descriptive detail. Our donors chose to help meet our project goal and completely fund a color printer for the classroom.

Our color printer makes numerous copies of the charts and graphs that our students use for their daily vital assessments. Students keep a record of their vital signs as a six weeks project. Health Records and documentation are a vital part of the Health Career Pathway. The experience of hands on activities, record keeping and documentation will serve our students as they continue in their education. Thank You, for choosing De Leon High School Health Science as a recipient of your generous donation.”

    With gratitude,

  • Furniture for Health-Related Technology Patient Care Lab

    Funded Mar 13, 2023

Thank you so much for your generous donation of furniture for our Health-Related Technology lab. Students are using the furniture to learn how to care for patients in their homes. They have learned how to assist a patient to get from their bed using walkers and canes, to the couch or chair. They have also learned how to help the patient sit comfortably on the couch and how to transfer the patient from the couch or chair to a wheel chair.

The students were extremely excited when the furniture arrived at the school and they helped to put together the furniture so it could be used in the lab. The students love being able to learn about caring for patients in their homes.

As the students continue to hone their skills in patient care, they will be encouraged to practice until they are able to complete the technique 100% of the time. Moving forward as the students move into 11th and 12th grade we will be looking at options for internships so these students can continue build on their existing knowledge and potentially go to college or get a job in the medical field.

Again, thank you for your generous support of our classroom and know your donation are making a huge difference in the education our students are receiving.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Orr

  • Anatomy and Physiology Equipment for Health-Related Technology Students

    Funded Mar 13, 2023

Thank you for the generous donations to our Donors Choose Project: Anatomy and Physiology Equipment for Health-Related Technology Students. Our students are studying Anatomy and Physiology, and the equipment provided through this project has allowed them to view different body cells using the microscope, providing them with new insight into how the body works.

When we first brought out the equipment for them to work with, they were very excited to be able to learn more about how the different muscles work in the body and how they interact with other body systems.

Over the next several weeks, the students will continue to learn more about how the body works and use the microscope and Circulatory STEM Challenge kits to understand how the circulatory system interacts with the rest of the body systems.

Again, thank you for your generous donations to our project; your donations make a difference in how our children learn in the classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Orr

  • Textbooks to Help Research and Future Health Professionals

    Funded Nov 28, 2023

We used information from the textbook to conduct a lab on transforming bacteria. We first prepared plates and took some photos of preparing the plates. Then we streaked the plates to grow our bacteria before introducing a glow protein.

The students learned many new techniques and enjoyed the hands on component. They learned sterile technique as they tried to keep plates isolated and clean while pouring. They also learned how to stack and cool the plates. The textbook served as a valuable tool in determining proper lab technique.

We plan on going into phlebotomy next and will be using the IV starts textbook as the reference material for the project. We plan to practice placing IV catheters and injecting medication intravenous and intramuscularly.

Thank you for this opportunity in helping have proper reference material to conduct our labs.”

  • Kids Love Stethoscopes With All Their Hearts!

    Funded Oct 29, 2023

My students cannot get enough of the stethoscopes provided to us through your generous donation. The kids were amazed to see how fast their heart rate increased as they zoomed up and down the empty hallway during our heart rate lab. Each student was interested to see of their own heartbeat sounded different that those of their classmates. Curiosity was ignited by these wonderful tools!

We will be continuing to use these and other health related tools throughout the year, here at Eisenhower middle school. Thank you for checking up on my Donors Choose page periodically to consider donating to my projects. My students appreciate you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Baumann
