  • Help Us Keep Students Focused and Phones Charged

    Funded Mar 6, 2024

Thank you for funding this needed upgrade for our phone culture. It has been a challenge these last several years to get students to give up their phones and just be where they are without distractions. The chargers and box you donated made a big change in the buy-in we've gotten from students around putting their phones away for the day. Now, they are incentivized with a full charge. There are still some holdouts. Every once in a while though, after coming up from lunch, one of them will swing by the box very nonchalantly and without a word plug it in for the period. I say thank you and they nod. It's not a big deal, but it is, and it wasn't possible before you donated to make it happen.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Wolf

  • Seeing the Macro Picture: Come in for a Close-Up

    Funded May 13, 2024

Today we opened the lens for the first time and attached it to our camera. Students were thrilled to use it and get pictures of their experiments as well as their friends. As the year winds down, we are putting together students' experimental projects, and that means papers, posters, and presentations. It is going to be so much more meaningful for them and their audience that they will be the source of the photos that tell the story of their work. I've already started teaching ISO, aperture and more to them using this lens. Thank you for making it all possible!”

  • New Headphones to Listen to Our Anti-Racist Podcasts

    Funded May 16, 2024

Thank you so much for supporting our anti-racist science and humanities project. I means a lot to my students to see themselves reflected in their work. It all means nothing however unless we have the tools to make meaningful products. These headphones will be put to use now and long into the future, thanks to you!”

  • A Tall Order: Supplies For Our Tower Garden

    Funded Aug 22, 2023

Thank you for allowing our tower garden to run for another season and more. Our latest project with the tower has been for experimental purposes. My students are doing their independent research as the year winds down, and they are employing the tower in their projects. As part of their experimental questions to address food insecurity, some students have asked if hydroponics can outperform traditional soil-based methods for growing food indoors.

It's been a joy to watch students take a genuine interest in growing food and watching them struggle with the difficulties involved. I hope they have a newfound appreciation for the food that ends up on their plates each day!

Your support has been indispensable. Our budget does not allow for items like the nutrients and supplies you donated. It is a harsh reality that schools are underfunded and teachers must resort to asking for well-meaning people like you to fill in the gaps. Until the day our politicians hear the people's will that schools should be fully funded, we depend on the generosity of people like you. Thank you!”

  • Can You Hear Me? A Microphone Would Help!

    Funded May 10, 2023

Thank you for making my class this week fun and productive! We are learning about the impacts of food insecurity in our communities in New York, and my students have prepared presentations about their research. It is so refreshing to finally have good sound on our videos. It is like listening to the sonorous voice of a podcaster hearing these recordings. Simple pieces of equipment like this, a $40 microphone, can make the difference in how students see themselves and their work. Your donation is making a real difference in how my students' voices are heard!”

  • Evolving, Designing, Flying!

    Funded Jun 28, 2023

Thank you so much for this generous donation of supplies. My students have spent the introduction project of my science class learning about flight and building their own flying machines. We spent lots of time reading and journaling about the types of wings and bodies and the types of lives different birds lead. Most recently, students used these ideas and your materials to build and then improve their own designs about flight. Along the way, they learned many of the principles of flight such as the four forces (lift, weight, thrust, and drag), and the value of the engineering design process.

Without your generosity, these types of projects cannot happen. Thank you for bringing hands-on, authentic learning to my students!”

  • Creating Multicultural Unity & Racial Equity Through Genetic Research

    Funded Oct 22, 2023

This is amazing news, thank you for making this project possible. In just a few months, we will be opening our DNA lab for students to extract and amplify DNA from one another and from community members in an effort to answer the question, "Is Race Real?" We simply cannot carry out this work without donors like you. Thank you thank you thank you!”

  • Books for Seeing a Brighter and Birdy-er Future

    Funded Mar 30, 2023

Thank you for helping me build a classroom library of books about birds. I am thrilled that students have had access to the same sorts of books that ignited my passion for birds. Each time we get something new, be it a field guide or a story book, I am inspired to try new things with them. This time around, students were using these books for inspiration to build their own flying machines. We spent lots of time reading and journaling about the types of wings and bodies and the types of lives different birds lead. Most recently, students used these ideas to build and then improve their own designs about flight. Along the way, they learned many of the principles of flight such as the four forces (lift, weight, thrust, and drag), and the value of the engineering design process.

  • Gel Electrophoresis Separates DNA, but DNA Doesn't Separate Us

    Funded Oct 10, 2023

Thank you so much for choosing our project on race and DNA. I am hopeful that with a broader and more scientific perspective, my students can become the critical thinkers and leaders we need to dismantle systems of racism and discrimination. This is challenging but very rewarding work, and I am so thankful for your help in making it happen!”

  • Neuroscience Necessities: What's the Book on the Brain?

    Funded Mar 9, 2023

My students and I are really excited by the arrival of the books you donated. We are preparing experiments about their own questions in neuroscience - how music can affect our attention, how age or gender impacts muscle memory, or how someone's native language can influence their recall in a memorization task.

One of the most important things in experiments is that students research the problems and concepts behind what they want to know. After taking a copy of "How the Brain Works" from the library and sharing it with them, they were excited by its bold pictures, simple explanations, and large number of topics. Thanks to you, it is such a gift to have our own class set of this and these other engaging titles. I can't wait to see their love of science and the brain deepen this coming few weeks as they read and research more in the lead up to their experiments. Thank you for making this possible!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Wolf

How do you learn science in a foreign language? My students, all of whom are recent immigrants, have the dual challenge of learning English at the same time they learn what they need to graduate high school. In my science class, I give them experiences they need to talk about - insects that won't behave, plants that grow without soil, Neanderthal skulls, and DNA from fish at the supermarket or even DNA from themselves. They ask questions, and we find out though experimenting together. In short, we DO science everyday, learning and practicing the language as we go. Please help keep our ambitions for a great education and a better life in America going with your support!
