Funded Jan 1, 2014First, I want to extend my gratitude for your generosity in funding my Donors Choose grant for my English Language Learners. The materials helped make a difference in the daily learning lives of my students. The children were very excited and eager to use the materials when received. I shared with them the purpose for their use. I can tell by looking at their excited little faces that they were ready to use them. I went over with them the proper use of the whiteboard markers and magnetic letters. They were reminded to return the magnetic letters to their appropriate spaces in the box/bin so that we could use them when needed.
One little boy who needs help holding his pencil correctly was very motivated to write with the pencil grip. The use of it helped him write neatly and not tire as easily. The children were excited when they received their notebooks. They quickly wrote their names on the front of their notebooks and liked that they were sturdy enough to use in the rug without having to use a board/book to lean on. The whiteboard markers also excited them. They liked that there were many colors to choose from and use with their whiteboards.
My English language learners used their notebook journals to write about their daily reading responses. They liked the idea that their primary notebooks had a picture box for their drawing and the writing lines allowed for correct letter and word formation. Having all their writing in one notebook helped the students see their progress throughout time.
The magnetic letters were very useful also. The children used the letters to make words. I have found them valuable during my morning intervention period. We have been building words (CVCe) and they can clearly see the silent "e" at the end of the word because the magnetic letters have red vowels and blue consonants. Also using them on the magnetic white board helped them when they had to manipulate the letters to build words. It supported the kinesthetic and visual learners as well.
The whiteboard markers were used with their mats to build words. The children wrote a word for example, "cake" then sounded out the word and slid their finger under each sound. As I gave them feedback and wrote it on the board, they were able to correct their mistakes with the markers and their mini white board erasers.
This project helped with boosting the student's confidence and learning. Using the materials successfully and being able to use hands-on materials impacted their learning. The children were enthusiastic about coming to the morning intervention program knowing that they were using materials that would contribute to their learning while having fun.
Once again, thank you for your generosity and in funding the materials for my English Language Learners.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Tortoledo
