I would like to express my gratitude to the donors for helping me obtain the toaster ovens. The toaster ovens will allow our nutrition classes to have the ability to resume food labs. Since the tornado we have not had the opportunity to be in their kitchen groups. The students' have really missed working together and eating their wonderful creations. We are so excited to be able to get things back to a semi-normal state.
The students will be able to continue to study diverse cultures and culinary arts. They make at least one meal from each country that they experience. They learn about spices and ingredients that they might not be exposed to at home. The literary, planning, demonstration, and tasting experience opens windows to new worlds for each student. The students enjoy experimenting with foods, presenting to their family at home, helping out their mothers, and feeding their athletic teams.
The students build self-confidence and independence within my foods class. They learn how to utilize an electric stove and oven as well as toaster ovens. They learn various temperatures, heating, and cooling. They work within time constraints and learning steps on how to cook a quick meal or a more lengthy homemade meal. They love to take the experience home with them to help their families as well as be prepared when they leave home. It's wonderful to see their self-confidence build and their faces light up when it's all said and done.
Every year we have an end of the year foods cook-off which entails recipe search, planning, setting the tables with a theme, and serving the faculty members. The end result is a competition against each other. Students become collaboratively involved in a secret menu of food, fun, and fantastic frivolity. During menu preparation the students learn about food preparations, texture, color, and nutritional factors. Every student enhances their ability by the end of the school year by these versatile experiences.
The students will be able to collaboratively work in smaller groups and individually as needed. The toaster ovens will give them back the continuity of the foods lab that we have lost. Hands on experiences are an important part of the overall learning process.
I hope to provide healthy, family friendly, time-saving menus they will enjoy preparing/serving. Students will learn that healthy food choices can be served at home and will not have to come from fast food service. Because of your kindness and thoughtfulness, our students will be able to say, "What are we cooking today Miss Waller?" ”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Waller
