  • Books Needed for New Battle of the Books!

    Funded Dec 4, 2010

Thank you so very much for your donation to support Battle of the Books at my school. This was the first year that our middle school had a club that was centered around reading. Without your donations our club may not have been able to start during this school year or as efficiently.

Students were exposed to varies types of literature that they might not typically choose for themselves to read. They were able to pick groups and work together as a team for a common goal. We had two competitions for Battle of the Books. A school-wide competition and one with a neighboring district. Students were thrilled to be able to be in a competitive setting in regards to reading!

Thank you once again for your kindness in donating.”

    With gratitude,

  • Help Bring Shakespeare Back To Middle School!!!

    Funded Nov 30, 2010

There are no words to express the gratitude that my students and I have towards your generous contribution to our Shakespeare Project. This Shakespeare Unit has made a positive impact on my students and you have helped achieve this goal.

My students were able to take their books home and read this wonderful play, Romeo and Juliet, in great detail. This unit opened the door to many activities and discussions in our classroom. The students performed and memorized their favorite lines of the play. They worked in groups to present their favorite scene just as the play describes. My students and I were also able to relate many of the things that happen on the play to our modern day. Learning the Shakespearean language was also a cornerstone in the completion of this unit. The discussions taken from this play were some of the best we have had in our class.

Thank you so much for making this unit possible. ”

  • Calculators for Scientists!

    Funded Nov 23, 2010

I want to extend my appreciation to each and every one of you for your generous donations to my classroom and students. I cannot tell you how much it means to me to have your support!

The new calculators that you helped fund have had an enormous impact on my students and my classroom. Students now have easy and reliable access to a tool which may seem simple, but greatly affects their learning. We use the new calculators quite often in class and the students love each having their own to use.

The most exciting use of the calculators so far has been our Science lab in which we measured the change in temperature caused by various chemicals. My students really enjoyed seeing it happen!”

  • Too Hot for the Instruments!!!

    Funded Nov 2, 2010

I would like to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to each of you for helping keep our hot classroom at a reasonable temperature. I don't know if you have ever tried to sit in a classroom that was at 90 degrees with no windows but my students have done it since we changed music rooms at the beginning of the year. They are SO very thankful to have this air conditioner to help regulate our classroom temp. I have students enjoying music class again and we are able to move and dance without fear that we will over heat. My students with special needs are now able to focus on their secondary needs as their personal and basic needs are finally being met. This was by far the most generous gift that could have been awarded to my students and their learning this year and I really want to thank you for helping make it possible. It is because of donors like you that teachers continue to teach and students are able to learn at the high caliber we expect them to.

    Again thank you!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Marth

  • Writing Our Way Into First Grade The Green Way

    Funded Dec 23, 2010

The Kindergarten classes at Hiawatha School cannot thank you enough for the thoughtfulness and generosity of your donation. The students love to use the dry erase boards.

We use the dry erase boards for many different activities in our classroom. In math, we learned to write our numbers and have moved on to addition and subtraction problems. In reading, we practice writing our sight words and word families. We also practice our printing.

Without your graciousness of this gift none of this would be possible! ”

  • Hamlet: Help Us Get Shakespeare Back Into The Classroom!

    Funded Nov 21, 2010

We are so very excited to begin using these plays in the coming weeks!

Thank you so much for your generous donations that have led to a class set of Hamlet, in a very "reachable" text. We will be using these texts in the early Spring--right around "The Bard's" birthday!

I am hoping to engage the students with some Reader's Theater activities as we progress through Hamlet. The students love acting out portions of the text. When they do this, they get to make meaning for themselves out of the text and thus comprehension increases!

It is with the sincerest of thanks that you've been able to bring us the gift of literature!”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher

  • Books to Excite Struggling Readers

    Funded Dec 7, 2010

Thank you so much for your donation. My students are very excited about the books and the different titles. I would like to share with you how these books are being used and what I have seen so far from my students.

The last half hour of our school day is reading enrichment. The students are divided into groups based on ability, normally in reading class there is no tracking, and we work on reading strategies. These books will be used this year to place the students in literature circles so they can work on self-directed activities as they Share the reading process with each other.

They love the books and are excited they are brand new. They do not often get new books for class, and that makes it all the more special. Thank You again.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Josey

  • Measure and Grow

    Funded Nov 27, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous donation to my classroom. The meter sticks are a huge contribution to our toolbox. Our school recently began using a garden as an outdoor classroom, a means to incorporate the environment into our lessons. Using 12-in rulers was very challenging for my middle school students to achieve accurate measurements. Now that they have meter sticks, they have a new sense of confidence, knowing that their answers will be more accurate. One of the reasons the students are more engaged now is because they have the opportunity to learn and work outdoors. They now have appropriate tools to be successful at the task before them. Another reason this is useful is because of the conversations that happen at the garden. Students are realizing the amount of work and responsibility associated with gardening, and they are becoming more interested in volunteering to help maintain the garden. They are now taking an active role in their community. I truly believe that such a minor thing as a meter stick has opened the eyes of my students to a whole new world.

My sixth grade students were able to gather data by measuring objects located in the garden. They then had to calculate the mean, median, mode and range of the data. My seventh grade students used their own heights and the lengths of their shadows to set up ratios to solve for the actual heights of tall objects found in the garden. And finally, my eighth grade students measured the heights of specific plants over time to create line graphs and make predictions. Often times, students are given data and are told to make the calculations, but they rarely have the opportunity to learn the process of gathering the data for themselves. In the real world, they will have to find the information and determine what makes it precise and/or accurate. I believe that, as an educator, I should help them learn this process so it becomes easier throughout the years.

Thank you once again for making a huge impact on my classroom. The meter sticks will be used frequently, especially as the spring weather warms up! The students are extremely excited to have new tools. The learning that will happen from this point forward will be immeasurable!”

  • Rewarding Responsibile, Respectful, and Safe Students

    Funded Dec 31, 2010

I want to thank you again for your generous support of my students, team, and classroom. The reward supplies (books, basketballs, post-its, etc...) have had a major impact on my students.

Our team used the supplies as an incentive for being their best during our testing weeks. Students were able to earn special tickets to be put into a huge raffle. During our testing weeks, students went above and beyond in showing respect and responsibility. Doors were opened for teachers, students used manners when talking to each other, and more importantly students supported each other during a very difficult two weeks. We had a team meeting with all 100 7th graders. The room was silent as we pulled names and roared with cheer once names were called. It was a great experience for both teachers and students.

Without your help, our students would never have had these amazing rewards. We all appreciate your gracious support. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Freeman

  • Middle School & Organized... No Longer a Juxtaposition

    Funded Jan 31, 2011

I want to thank you again for your generous support of my students and our classroom. The organization supplies (binders, expandable files, and tabs) are in use daily. The supplies have increased student confidence in having materials and being prepared for class. My students have learned new organizational skills and I am able to reinforce those skills with weekly organizational checks. We have seen an increase in turned in homework that was normally at the bottom of their locker! I am so excited to see their independence grow daily and the students are even more excited!

Without your help, these resources would not have been able to be in the hands of my students. These resources have been a critical part of the success of my students. Organizational skills are a vital part of high school education, college education, and for all careers. I believe that the teaching of these skills, along with your resources, have given my students opportunities for success.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Freeman
