  • Oil Immersion Microscope for my Biology Classes

    Funded Oct 5, 2009

I would like to convey my thanks to you for your magnamity in providing my classroom with the Wolfe CFL oil immersion microscope. I am like many of my students in that I am easily impressed with any equipment that is new, but what is impressed my students that have used it thus far is that the concepts I've been attempting to teach them become actually tangible and real to them, rather than abstract and obtuse.

The most challenging aspect of teaching microbiological topics, or cell biology topics, is that they are only immediately accessible to those students capable of abstract thought-processes, and the reality is that too many students are seldom challenged to think in such a way. This makes science inaccessible to the typical student, and is an unacceptable reality of modern science education, where the emphasis is overwhelmingly on recall of facts that are tied to "standards", and development of inquiry-based instruction and allowing students and teachers to investigate a deeper understanding of nature than what is outlined in those standards is actively discouraged.

Your gift makes the content now immediately accessible to far greater range of students, and has also allowed me to introduce a greater range of topics to them that I otherwise would be able to do (or at least to do well). It has allowed my students to literally see the results of their own curiosity, and has been a rewarding experience.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Kordella

  • LCD For LCMs!!

    Funded Nov 7, 2009

Thank you for your contributions to the LCD projector purchased for my classroom. It will be used in my Geometry, Algebra II, and Algebra I classes, for a total of 140 students. My students were extremely excited to begin using it. One even suggested that now he has a reason to come to school!

So far, in Geometry class, we've used the projector to look up real-life examples of the 3D shapes we've learned (pyramids, spheres, etc). The students were very proud of themselves when, upon my showing them a picture of the Memphis Pyramid online, they realized that they could justify why it was called a pyramid. We've used the LCD projector to watch videos and PowerPoints, and to conduct class-wide Google searches to look for information. I'm quite confident that the overheard projector in our room is history!

Many of my students were stunned to learn that people who did not know them cared enough about them to donate to their education. Not only were they thrilled to have a new classroom tool, they were obviously inspired by your selfless generosity.

Once again, on behalf of my students, thank you. Happy holidays!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kuriakose

  • Electronic Writing Tablets For Disabled Students

    Funded Nov 13, 2009

Thank you so much for your generosity to my students and the classroom. These writing tablets will make it so much easier for my students to write and express themselves. Some of the students have graphomotor issues and this will make it a lot easier for them. The tablets hooked up easily to the classroom computers and are very versatile. It is because of people like yourselves that my students have greater opportunities for learning and growing through generous donations of technology and other tools. Thank you once again and please know that your contributions are appreciated and truly functional.”

  • Have the Equipment - Need the DNA Kit

    Funded Oct 5, 2009

A student asked , "Will we get to see DNA?". I sadly said, "No". There was no

funding to purchase the DNA kit.

You gave them the opportunity to see the DNA bands that form on an agrose

gel and to compare evidence DNA against suspect X and Y. They learned how to

use a micropipet, a centrifuge and an electrophoresis apparatus. They have a

greater understanding of how DNA fingerprinting is done in real life criminology.

My class was so excited! Thank you so much for your generosity!!

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mitchell

  • Critically Ill Students Need Access to the Computer

    Funded Oct 10, 2009

Thank you so much ! These two wonderful net books just arrived the other day and already some things are changing. There are more students hanging around the technology office just waiting to go. These two net books will have a special roll in our school, because they were requested to help the learning disabled and traumatic brain injury student. These net book will be used to teach basic note taking and writing skills to these students. Often these students have a lot to say , but their organizational and writing skills need remediation. It is hope with these primary tools that they will begin to regain some of the skills that might have been lost.

In addition to this, I will begin seeking out funding for a dynamic tool such as the digital pen, to work in conjunction with the net books. In this manner students will be able to write their notes, plug their usb pen into their notebook and have their notes typed out clearly. I believe that this project will certainly improve the organizational and writing skills of these students. Ultimately with good notes these students test scores will improve in all subject ares

Once again I thank you for helping fund this worthy project”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Desimone
