Sciencewomen Reader Challenge 2008

Part of: Science Blogs
  • $3,229raised
  • 18projects funded
We're hoping that, in this time of global economic crisis, climate change, and political turmoil, our readers (generous souls all) can dig deep to help some kids learn skills they're going to need to deal with the mess we leave them. Thanks for whatever you can give, all donations will be gratefully appreciated. And for those who can't donate, thanks for your good wishes and maybe spreading the word to others.

-- Science Woman and Alice Pawley
  • Gorgeous Greenhouse for the Gifted

    Funded Oct 17, 2008

Thank you so much for your donation. It is because of you that we will be able to successfully complete our Gorgeous Greenhouse for the Gifted project. We are very appreciative to have the support of people like you who understand the importance of keeping students actively engaged. Please know that your generosity will never be forgotten. We are anxiously anticipating the start of our project, and hope that it will encourage other classrooms to want to learn more about plants as well.

    Thanks Again,

    Mrs. A”

  • Help Us Turn Green And Recycle All Year Round.

    Funded Dec 17, 2008

Thank you so much for funding our project to help us turn green and recycle all year round. Your gracious contribution to this project is greatly appreciated. Both our students and community will benefit from your generous gift. The students will learn the importance of recycling and gain life long skills that will enhance their lives and the environment in which they live. I went to the downtown Neiman Marcus store and saw the huge Christmas tree in the window with ornaments made out of recycled material with facts about how much of each material used in the Christmas tree is wasted. It is really amazing and was created by a Dallas student. That is my goal here at our school not only to have them use the containers to recycle but to educate them on how important it is to recycle and how much material is wasted every day. Thank you so much.

    Sincerely, Mar”

  • Science Exploration

    Funded Nov 2, 2008

Thank you so very much. The children and I are so very excited to have been funded. We had a good time picking out our materials as a group. The science exploration tubs, the specimen sorting center and the magnifier center will make learning and discovering fun and exciting. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your generosity. The materials will benefit the children for years to come”

  • Future Engineers and Designers: Geometry in Kindergarten!

    Funded Oct 31, 2008

Thank you so much for your generosity in funding my proposal to promote geometry in my kindergarten classroom. As you know, students who are interested and do well in math have many, many career options later in life. A love of math opens many doors!

My group of students this year is very diverse and consists mostly of boys. All of them love hands-on projects and they are going to love the pattern blocks and math center. I have noticed during the past few months how much more engaged they are with a project if it is open-ended. Pattern blocks and basic shape blocks can be used to create anything and everything.

As teacher classroom funding has been severely cut in Alabama, this funding is especially appreciated. Just this week, the teachers in my system were told that we will only get $400 of the usual $525 of classroom supply money this year and we are not permitted to spend any more than $50 before January. Since the majority of classroom supply money is for consumables, we are trying to figure out how to "make do." We know that we are facing some rough economic times at school but our students shouldn't suffer!

Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness in helping my students have the classroom environment that they deserve”

  • Infusing Engineering Design into the Classroom!

    Funded Oct 28, 2008

This is exciting! I very much appreciate your generosity and support. The donation that allows my students to use the Engineering Notebook will help ensure that I am able to instill in my students the need to stay organized and to record all thoughts and calculation processes in a logical manner. Since most college courses now require that students document thought processes using one of these notebooks, my students will have a better understanding of what is required of them and will be able to take these with them to use as a model. Thank you so very much for your support and encouragement to continue to be the educator that I am. I appreciate you”

  • Safety First!

    Funded Oct 27, 2008

My heart soared as I read the notice that our proposal had been funded! One of my top priorities is to keep my students safe during my time with them. Your generosity in funding this proposal will help them feel even safer during science activities. The students love to do experiments and have studied how scientists stay safe. The class is excited to follow those procedures with the materials that you helped supply! Thank you so very much”

  • Math Literature Links To Learning

    Funded Oct 22, 2008

I want to express my appreciation for your generosity. You truly did a wonderful thing. Your contribution will directly benefit my students. The literature you have funded will help students understand various math concepts. I attended a recent school board meeting and heard how state and local school budgets are being affected due to the struggling economy. More and more teachers are writing grants asking for materials that are necessary to teach children because schools can no longer afford these items. Your donation means so much to me but even more to the children. Again, thank you so much for all you have done for my students”

  • What's Your Function?

How can I thank you enough for your generous donation? My students love math and this can be a fun way to enhance our skills and become even better mathematicians. Again, thank you for your generous donation”

  • Manipulating Math

    Funded Oct 20, 2008

Thank you so much for funding my project. I am so excited that my students will have new manipulatives that will help them understand our curriculum. The Hands-On Standards series is great because it addresses the need to teach students required subjects that will be on our standardized test, but it does so with manipulatives. I know my students will enjoy using this set and will be very appreciative! Thank you again”

  • Falling Pages

    Funded Oct 15, 2008

Thank you so much on behalf of my students. They are so wonderful and deserve the very best. You have helped to make this come true for them. Some of my students don't feel that they are important to anyone. They are so excited to know that some one cared enough to donate money for them to have things that they need.

You have made my day and the greatest day for my 7th grade math students!

    With deepest thanks and appreciation!
