Rebuild Joplin Schools

  • 24schools served
  • 292teachers supported
Over 260 classrooms in Joplin, Missouri were destroyed by the tornado on May 20, 2011. Joplin teachers worked tirelessly to restock their classrooms with the things they lost: pens, paper, books, calculators, clocks, lab coats and more. <p> <p> You and other donors came to the rescue, funding at least one project for every classroom that had to start from scratch.
  • STEM Of Knowledge

    Funded Oct 8, 2013

Thank you so much for your generous donation that allowed me to purchase the Mythbuster's experiments and the Science Olympiad Kit. My students were very excited to see the Mythbuster's activities and be able to do some of the same experiments they see on television. They are also finding the Science Olympiad activities very challenging.

We have turned our Science Club into a competition. My students divide into teams and see who can complete the challenge or successfully do the experiments first. They are recruiting new students every week to join in.

These activities have allowed me to build on what we are already teaching in the classroom. Students are taking what they know and applying it to the challenges and competitions we have in our club. It is great to hear them problem-solving using the knowledge they got in class.

Again, thank you so much for your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Chlanda

  • Portable Workspace

    Funded May 23, 2013

Thank you so much for your wonderful contributions to this project! My students love using the lap desks while they work! These lap desks allow them to work in a space that is comfortable for them, instead of just working at a desk while sitting in a hard chair all day. We've enjoyed taking these lap desks into the school's outdoor learning center and have enjoyed nice weather while working on schoolwork.

Thank you, again, for giving to my classroom and allowing my students to have access to these materials!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Spieckermann

  • Broaden Our Musical Horizons With Finale!

    Funded May 24, 2013

It is with extreme appreciation that I write to you this letter of thanks! We have only just begun to use our "Finale" music notation software, but students in my Orchestra and Choir program have already benefited from the use of "Finale". With "Finale", the program you helped provide, we have been able to arrange music. We have already collaborated on a project for our fall concert "Spooktacular 2013". My Choir students and a very talented String Quintet from my Orchestra, helped arrange the very popular song "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons. It was an amazing hit featuring my full 88 member middle school choir and 5 string players! My Orchestra students and I are now in the process of arranging "Jingle Bell Rock" for our upcoming Holiday Concert, "The North Pole Music Fest". Because of your contribution, my students and I will continue to use "Finale" to explore the musical world of arrangement and composition!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cole

  • Preparing For The Future 2

    Funded Jun 5, 2013

I am so thankful for the resources you provided for our classroom! The students and I were SO excited to open the boxes when they arrived! The students are currently using the math materials in stations and in small groups to help them practice the concepts of less than, greater than, equal to, place value and rounding. They will use them many times in the future as well when we study geometry and measurement and data. These resources cover all of our priority math standards. We are so grateful for the support you have shown us! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!”

  • Joplin Has Something To Say

    Funded Oct 8, 2013

Thank you for donating an ipad and case to our classroom! We have used it every day for various activities. I downloaded an app called educreations which has been amazing for my students. It allows them to teach others about different things we have learned. They have an account, and record themselves talking about the topic they are teaching about. They can also draw, write and add pictures to the video as they are teaching. It kind of reminds me of what they use during NFL games to show plays to the television audience. They learn so much more when they are forced to teach the subject matter we are learning about. We also use the ipad to film videos and podcasts. We are going to start a weekly Science podcast. My students love playing reading, science and math games on the ipad during center time. They are so excited about it! Thank you!”

  • Math Learning Games

    Funded Sep 6, 2013

Your generous donations to my classroom full of eager first grade students has had a lasting impact on the learning of each student. I have been able to use these manipulatives with each student and insure that they have a solid understanding of addition facts. I also have used these manipulatives in small groups. Most first graders understand addition concepts well, however, some students need extra hands-on-practice.

These balances have also been a great science tool. We just finished a balance and weighing unit that we were able to complete because of your generous donations. Thanks for your support of education.”

  • Food for Thought

    Funded Aug 12, 2013

My students were so excited to see our shipment of snacks arrive. I tried to emphasize the fact that people that don't even know us donated money to our project so that we could receive our snacks. I'm not sure if they totally understood the generosity that was involved, but I sure did. They were just happy to receive the snacks. I was thankful for the snacks as well, but more than that, so very thankful for your generous heart.

Because of you, my students are able to have a mid-morning snack every school day. It gives them the fuel they need to make it until lunch. The snacks offer them an opportunity to socialize with their peers for a few minutes and unwind. After their snack they are much more willing to get back to work. Thank you again for making such a huge difference in my students school day.”

  • Creative School Counseling

    Funded Oct 8, 2013

A very big thank you goes out to U.S. Cellular for donating to my guidance program. My students were very excited to add the new books to our guidance resources. Due to your generosity, my students have colorful, engaging picture books that will introduce and reinforce necessary social skills. These thought-provoking stories address everyday situations that kids can relate to. I feel more equipped now to introduce, model, and reinforce positive social behavior. Students are learning why it's important to have good character and that they have the power and responsibility to make good choices for themselves.

The donation from U.S. Cellular will enhance the eduction of my students this year and for years to come. Each book will be used one-on-one, in small group settings, and for classroom guidance lessons. These resources will capture the students attention and provide opportunities for learning character education and social/life skills. Learning the proper social skills will help them become happy and healthy citizens, that are confident and successful.

I would like you to know that your thoughtfulness is truly making a difference in the lives of so many students. Your commitment to helping children is greatly appreciated. My students would not have access to these materials if it was not for people like you.

I am very grateful for your support! What a difference your donation will make in the education of our children! Thanks again for going the extra mile to give these students a great education.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Robinson

  • iCan Be a Fluent Reader

    Funded Oct 8, 2013

I teach reading and writing to third, fourth and fifth graders. I come from a school where half of my students are from low socio-economic homes, and are not confident in their reading abilities because they are unaware of the progress they are making.

I intend on showing my students how good they really are at reading. By using iPods to track their progress as readers, my students will be able to "see" the progress that I, as their teacher, can see. This project will not only help them monitor their progress, but it will also help them build confidence and hear and pinpoint what they need to work on.

I am very excited to implement this project in my classroom, and I thank you so much for your generous donation!”

    With gratitude,

  • iPads for Autism

    Funded May 15, 2013

My students cheered and are very happy about having the new Pad in our classroom. They couldn't wait to use the new addition to the classroom. The students are using the new resource the Pad with educational games and working on new skills. Many of the student lack fine motor skills to write and other daily skills, but with the Pad the students can use their fingers or pictures to communicate to others. The project boost my teaching and student's learning by giving students a chance to work independently, which gives me more of a chance to work with other students. The students use the new Pad daily in the classroom and it gets much use. Thank you everyone who donated to my project. You helped make a difference in my students lives.

    Thanks, Martha Maples”
