To all our school friends, we want YOU to get involved. Donors Choose provides grant money to school classrooms that are in need of a number of items - many of which we at Lab School take for granted. We have selected a handful of projects that we think are worthy of receiving funds and we are so appreciative of your helping us to support these classrooms. No gift is too small, and taking the time to donate is so BIG! Thank you for helping us help others
  • Little Things Mean a Lot

    Funded Feb 7, 2010

It is very true that little things mean a lot.The easel you purchased for our classroom is used every day, multiple times each day. My students use it for presentations on the books they've read, we write our morning message on it, and we wheel it around the room to use it with small groups. Also, we're saving tons of paper as I don't have to use butcher paper nearly as often as before. Thank you for realizing that our children deserve to have nice materials in their classroom. You're also teaching them a life-long lesson on the impact of philanthropy; they were amazed (and extremely grateful) that people who don't know them would care about their education. You are good friends to your friends in whose honor you gave, and to your 6th-grade friends in room 411. Thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Byrnes

  • Flip Video Camcorders for High-Poverty Arts Magnet

    Funded Jan 7, 2010

The two Flip Video Cameras that were donated to the school music department have seen quite a bit of use in the last 3 months. They are easy for the students to use and readily available in the music room. One of the interesting things that has happened is that the students tell other teachers in the school that there are Flip Videos in the music room and so other teachers are borrowing the cameras to record special projects in their rooms.

We are a Fine and Performing Arts School and it is required that we show proof of learning. The Flip Videos allow us to do this easily. The software contained in the Flip Video system has a process that enables us to take a photo from part of the video. We use the video as well as the photos to document the learning process. The students have found this most interesting and have printed pictures, put them in frames, and hung them in the hallway outside of the music room. Parents routinely stop by to look at the photos and the monthly tours of our school always stop by to check out the photos.

Lastly, the Flip Video allows me an easy way to save all of the students performances both in the classroom and on stage. My students and I watch the video to evaluate our performance, analyze what was of high quality and what needs improvement. When my students go out into the community to perform, the Flip Video fits easily into my pocket and I can always hand it off to a parent or student to record our performance.

These little cameras provide us with an amazing amount of information and enjoyment.”

  • Elmo loves 7th Graders

    Funded Jan 7, 2010

I can not begin to tell you how excited my students and I are about this new technology that you donated to our classroom.Every time the ELMO is turned on their eyes light up with a joy that is indescribable and has made our classroom an even greater learning environment. We asked for this donation because we needed to have the opportunity to be able to compete with the technology that is offered in schools with more funding. My students and I often have conversations about becoming productive citizens and making something great of themselves. Through your generosity the see now that people care about them and their success. You all have helped us become steps closer to our goal. You will never truly know what this ELMO means to us. This month students are doing Career presentations using the ELMO just to see these presentations and the work they put into it has been amazing. I think they are more excited about using the ELMO then the actual assignment itself. ”

  • Mini Computers for Writing and Research

    Funded Mar 3, 2010

Your donation has truly been a blessing. My students are enjoying using their new netbooks! When they first arrived, they could barely contain their excitement and they were amazed at how lucky they are to have such a wonderful resource in their classroom.

Since the netbooks have arrived, my students have been diligently working on writing using word processing software. We just finished up a poetry unit. It's so refreshing for them to take a step back from the traditional pencil/paper routine and use technology. Not only are they improving their writing skills, they are improving their typing skills. They also have been practicing their research skills; learning how to search the web for information and how using key search words has a big impact on search results.

Without these netbooks, my students would be limited to how often they get to use computers in their daily school routine. Since having the netbooks, they have computers at their fingertips. Using technology is not only improving their writing/research skills, its preparing them for a technology driven world. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity!

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Belokas

  • See Your Life Through a Different Lens

    Funded Feb 6, 2010

I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity. My students were absolutely stunned when I unpacked the camera and told them that people who care, whom they've never met, value and care about them.

The camera is getting so much use. The children are so excited to discover this new tool. We are experimenting with different ideas. The biggest benefit is that the children who never really liked to participate in class, are taking a new interest in class.

I am so grateful for donor's such as you!”

  • Bringing History Alive

    Funded Feb 5, 2010

You have allowed history to come alive for my students. Thank you for your support. You have truly made a difference in the lives of 80 students.

Before, we received the projector, my students did not have access to the visuals, activities and resources a projector allows. We have been able to see and hear videos and audio recordings and pictures that before were impossible to view. The projector has allowed me to reach students more effectively. Some of the students are visual and/or audio learners and the project allows me to cater to their learning style. The students are so excited every time the projector is used and I cannot wait to see them present their constitution projects.

Again, thank you so much for your generosity. You have made such an impact. All the best from seventh grade!”

  • Honesty is the Best Policy

    Funded Feb 5, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous donation of privacy partitions to my seventh grade classroom.

We have been using these partitions almost daily since they arrived a few weeks ago! They have been especially helpful during test taking. I am much more confident that the answers and responses on students' tests are their own. It also helps kids to focus on the task at hand, especially during a test that may be timed. I was shocked and surprised when some students asked to borrow privacy partitions during Writing Workshop. They were being distracted by other kids' talking when they wanted to work. I was so happy I could provide the tool they needed to do their very best!

I can not thank you enough for your gift!”

  • Sensory Therapy for Kids with Autism!

    Funded Dec 21, 2009

Thank you for your generosity in support of my classroom. Your efforts have had such a positive and beneficial effect on my students. My class is made up of eight students with moderate to severe autism. These children range in abilities and strengths. They are a very diverse group with a wide range of needs. This grant provided me with tons of materials for sensory therapy. My students were in awe when they saw the table full of new supplies. They have such a great time using the different levels of theraputty, playing with the sensory balls, and using the other materials. These activities help give my students necessary sensory input so they are able to regain focus and attention for academic activities. I have already started to see improvement and the calming affect of this therapy and I can only imagine the progress that is to come! Thank you for giving my students the chance to reach their potential in this way! We really appreciate it!

    Sincerely,

    Ms. H's Class”
