  • Read by Example

    Funded Jun 12, 2014

Every time a project is funded, I feel so grateful for all of the support and love that floods our classroom. No matter the size of your donation, the impact of your contribution has been felt in the form of joyful readers.

My scholars love meeting new characters during their reading adventures. Whether it is a mistake Lily made, a joke that Piggie and Gerald told or the endless request of a little mouse, my scholars close each book with a new outlook on life and an investment in reading.

As my scholars prepare for second grade, these texts enrich their comprehension skills and aid with their fluency as they invent voices for each character on successive readings.

    I cannot thank you enough.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Acharya

  • Three Little Pigs? or Three Little Wolves?

    Funded May 29, 2014

This project was so much fun! The students were extremely excited to receive a package in the mail that was just for them! The books that you helped to fund were a mix of traditional fairy tales and fractured fairy tales (which are fairy tales told from a different point of view). We learned about the big bad wolf, heard his version of the story, and were able to determine that he was just misunderstood. :) The students enjoyed learning the traditional tales, but also engaging with modern versions and not-so-familiar stories. The books were on all different subjects and levels so that every student found a book that was right for them!

You have truly made a difference in our classroom. We are so thankful for you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gonzalez

  • My Littlest Readers Need More Books

    Funded Jul 20, 2014

Your generous donation has done so much for my students. The books are beautiful -- shiny, new, brightly colored, and easy to read. The children in my room love the books that you sent to them. They have been read, requested, and reread more times than I could ever keep track of. They have been shared with classmates and taken home to be read to younger brothers and sisters. A few of them have been proclaimed "my most favorite book" and then hugged.

One of the greatest challenges my littlest readers face is finding a book that they can read, cover to cover, all by themselves. It can be so hard to motivate students when things are difficult. Having a big stack of books that the children were truly able to read on their own has helped me tackle that challenge. I am very grateful. My students got off to a great start because of your donation.

Our district, like so many others in Michigan, is currently facing a budget shortfall. Without your generosity, my classroom would never have received these incredible books. Thank you very much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mitchell

  • Help to Update Classroom Library for a First Year Teacher!

    Funded Jun 7, 2014

This was a very large project and I am amazed at the amount of people who came together to help me get the supplies that I need. As a first year teacher there were many great books I wanted for my classroom that I would have had to purchase on my own. This project helped me to build my classroom library giving me around 50 new books to read to my students. These books are helping to build their love of reading as well as introducing them to new ideas and ways to write. I also received a listening station, which is a favorite during literacy stations. I had multiple cassettes of great stories left for me to use without any way to play them my first year. This project has been so helpful with our learning. I am so thankful for all of the donations and we just love all of the new books!”

    Mrs. McEwen

  • Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader

    Funded May 27, 2014

I wish you could have been there. The day the giant boxes from Amazon arrived in our classroom filled with beautiful new books! The excitement the students (and I) had when opening those boxes was wonderful. The student and I were amazed by the volume and quality of new reading material we had before us. The books were filled with colorful photographs and illustrations that captured the students' interest. The wanted to read all day! They even groaned when they had to stop reading in order to go to lunch.

Since that day, those books continue to be an amazing addition to our classroom library. It has sparked my students' curiosity in more non-fiction topics. They have used those books to do reports. It's amazing the facts they share with me every day that they learn from those books.

I wish I could adequately convey the appreciation I have for your generous donation. The impact it already has had is immense, there is no telling what the exposure to these high quality materials will have on students in the future.”

  • Listening Center-Music and Books

    Funded Jul 30, 2014

Thank you so much for your contribution to our donor's choose project! My class enjoys the listening center every day. We have put so much music and so many books onto our iPod. All my students love to listen, sing along, and dance during our circle time and listening activities! This wouldn't have been possible without your contribution.

Circle time is something that really gets our day going. We have picture cards paired with our morning songs and the students in my class get to choose what songs they want to do. They love being able to have a choice. We had so many amazing books and music donated for us to listen to! Thank you so much!

Stories are more exciting when they can listen to them with music and different narrators telling their favorite stories! Our listening library is really growing! Many of these students don't have exposure to these things at home and they request them all day long! It is so important for these students to have a love for books, and because of you they have it. This helps with their listening and attending skills along with their comprehension. Thank you for giving them that gift!”

  • Readers are Leaders!

    Funded Jun 10, 2014

I started this project at the end of the school year and the project was funded shortly after. Since summer break was around the corner, students had to wait until the following school year, before they could get their hands on the books. However, the wait was well worth it! The kids were super excited to see all the new books waiting for them on the first day of school. Most of the books were read within the first week. The favorites have been read over and over again.

Everyday, I was have structured the schedule so students can read for at least 15 minutes in their reading corners. Students love to snuggle up with a blanket or a pillow around the room and get lost in the books. I used to see students grab a book, sit at the computer to take a quiz and thumb through the pages just looking for answers. These new books are so engaging that the students read the entire book, sometimes twice, before they ever think about the quiz.

Several of my students have already met their goal for reading for the entire school year! Our first Donors Choose project had a huge impact on their love for reading and this project continues to fuel their enjoyment. My students were shocked that we got our project funded again and were very thankful for all the generosity. We had several discussions focused around the kindness of others and how there are people everywhere invested in their success.

Thank you so much for your generosity and support for the students in my classroom. It is very much appreciated!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Geminert

  • Materials for School Counseling Program!

    Funded May 20, 2014

The books and materials I received from this project have been so useful in my comprehensive school counseling program this year! I regularly use these materials in my small groups, individually, and in my classroom lessons. I read the book to the student, and then build upon the skills using follow up activities. The kids absolutely love them!

Thank you so much for contributing to my growing counseling program at all three of my schools! Books are essential for connecting with kids and my students have benefited so much already from these materials that you helped purchase! They will continue to grow and learn using the books and materials from this project. Thank you again for your generosity!”

  • Read Us a Story

    Funded Jul 22, 2014

My students LOVE the books and Cd's that you helped supply to our classroom! The students love to see which story they will get to hear each week! They are so excited to go to Listen to Reading with a friend and then write about their favorite part of the story they have just listened to. They think this is the BEST reading station!

Each week the story and Cd's are used in the Listen to Reading rotation of our Daily 5...Read to Self, Word Work, Work on Writing, Teacher, Listen to Reading. Having these stories available allow more students to choose this area during this time...before only 3 students were allowed at this rotation because I only have 3 computers in my classroom, but now 5 students can Listen to Reading. The students absolutely LOVE to hear a story read to them. These books and Cd's have allowed these students more opportunities to be read to.

The funding of this project has been a tremendous help to me and my students. Before I received these books and Cd's, I was limited to the books available for my students to use in the Listen to Reading station. Our school library mostly consisted of books and tapes (which were difficult for my students to use and often broken). The Cd's and books are such an added benefit to both the students and myself.

We GREATLY appreciate you allowing us to Listen to Reading daily in our classroom!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rogers

  • TIME Magazine for ESL Students!

    Funded May 17, 2014

The TIME for Kids Magazines are an incredible resource for my students. They love reading the articles in the magazines and even request to take them home for homework! It is wonderful to see how excited they are to read these non-fiction articles and learn about different places around the world.

We have been using these magazines as a non-fiction resource in our classroom. My students enjoy learning about the topics covered in the magazines. We have been able to use our new learnings in our writing as well. They wrote compare and contrast essays to compare different cultures. My students are enjoying reading the magazines and writing about them as well. I am so proud of them for working so hard in class and it is always a pleasure to see them excited to learn.

Thank you again for supporting our classroom. I could not bring these wonderful opportunities to my students without you. I am truly grateful.”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher
