This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
When people ask what you read in high school, a number of classics are sure to be on the list. One such classic is, The Great Gatsby. During this unit, my students enjoy questioning whether Nick is a reliable narrator, love dissecting Jay and Daisy's relationship, and wonder what it really is that earned Jay his wealth. However, many of my students are reading below grade level and struggle to readily engage with a challenging book. This is why I am working on building my classroom library with supporting graphic novels.
As most of my students are also fashion and art students and prove to be strong visual learners, a graphic novel version of a classic text can support their understanding of challenging material.
The union of literature and art truly capture my students' attention and imagination. A companion graphic novel is a perfect hook to pull my students into becoming lifelong readers and welcoming literature that challenges them.
