Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Do you know what is in the food that you eat? Many of my students are not aware of the large amounts of sugar and fat in the foods they eat!
My school has a diverse population.
We have 16% white, 14% African American, 53% Hispanic, 14% Asian and 1% Native American. We also have a wide range of economic backgrounds. About 61% of our population is economically disadvantaged. We also have a small percentage of students that come from wealthy homes.
In our state, our obesity rate is growing higher at an alarming rate. Some of my students are already obese and some are overweight and headed toward obesity. In fact, for the past 3-4 years, my city has been the #1 or #2 most obese city in our state. It is quite obvious that we have a growing problem.
My Project
My students need a My Plate Kit, sugar-visuals teaching kit,and How Much Fat? Test Tube Displays to make healthy choices in foods that they eat. In the My Plate kit, there are many hands-on visuals that students can use to actually see what a serving size is. They will learn what nutrients they need and where they can get those nutrients. They can also be exposed to foods that they have not seen. The students can also see what a balanced meal looks like. I also have some games that we can play with the food models to help them plan a balanced meal.
The sugar and fat visuals will make a great impact. Students don't really know what is in the foods that they are eating and drinking. When they can see how much sugar is actually in the sodas they drink, they have more information that can help them make healthier decisions. In the empty tubes, I will add sugar or fat to show students how much sugar and fat are in healthy foods and drinks. This will help motivate them to make healthy choices!
When I look at my students who struggle with being overweight or obese, my heart just goes out to them.
I want to give them the information they need to make good choices. I also want to motivate them and help them to recognize that eating healthy is the best choice for them today and tomorrow. For my students who do not yet struggle with being overweight, I want them to know what the best choices are to avoid being overweight. I want my student to feel good and live a long healthy life!
