it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I work with 25 amazing students with Autism. They face challenges every day learning, communicating and interacting with others. With your help, my students will have new toys to use during play based language lessons and they will play to learn and learn to talk!
I am a Speech Language Pathologist in an inner city, high-need community.
I provide direct therapy and language support services to students in three classrooms in our district-based Autism Spectrum Disorder program. My students are challenged daily to communicate with others and understand the world around them. They have a wide range of communication skills and benefit from the use of pictures to communicate and learn. Several of my students also use speech generating devices to communicate. My students are interested in toys...but many times don't know "how to play" with them or how to engage in cooperative play. I want to "teach" my students how to play with these toys and their friends, building crucial language and communication skills at the same time.
My Project
Like many students on the Autism spectrum, my students need to be motivated to communicate. I'm always looking for items that will motivate them enough to want to initiate a request and can be used to then expand their vocabulary skills. During one of our recent sessions all of my students were motivated by the farm and house that we have. Even though they all had an animal, person, or vehicle what they wanted most was the actual farm and house. I want to build on their recent eagerness and motivation by introducing new activity sets. I found a school, an airport, a castle, a garage and a space station. I know these toys will capture the attention of my students and our play sessions will be rich with language. I am also requesting storage bins and cleaning wipes to keep our new toys clean and organized. A rolling cart will store our toys and make it easier to transport them from room to room.
Your support will provide my students with a fun way to build crucial communication and language skills.
These toys will bring the motivating, multi-sensory opportunities they need to increase functional language use and learn new vocabulary and concepts. With your help my students will play to learn and learn to talk!
