There is more to be learned than what is found within the four walls of a classroom or the covers of a book. For my inner city, economically disadvantaged social studies students (grades 9-12), exploring the wider world is typically not an option. Help change that. Let's show them what is possible.
Children of low income, single moms have a hard time understanding the value of studying other cultures in far-away places.
I have held their attention with pictures of my own trips. For most it's been their first exposure to someone who has been to another country. My students are African American and Hispanic minorities who rarely get out of their own neighborhood. Now, we take them abroad. "The World is Our Classroom" program is entering its eighth year. Students might have a peer who has been to the Roman Coliseum, the Acropolis in Athens, The Dachau Holocaust camp in Germany, or Madrid's Prado museum. A friend might have been with us exploring Incan Peru, China's Great Wall, or Stonehenge in England! The flood-gates are open. It's not about the traveling; it's about the possibilities. This year we will explore the natural history and culture of Costa Rica. Dreams can come true. Students fund raise for 100% of the trip cost, making books for the trip unaffordable.
My Project
My program will take 20 high performing high school students to Costa Rica to explore the culture and natural history. To make this trip all it can be, we need your help to purchase guidebooks. We will visit the volcanoes and natural canopy, cloud forest, and turtle sanctuaries unique to Costa Rica. My Hispanic and African American students will demonstrate confidence with their Spanish speaking skills. Students will be exposed to new ways of life. They'll apply their math skills in budgeting their limited spending money. Students work hard to raise money, maintain their grades (by contract) and earn the privilege to participate in this once-in-a lifetime trip. A first time away from home! They will learn about themselves. Books will jump-start the experience. High quality guidebooks for each student will allow them to prepare for the trip, get the most out of the country and culture while on the trip, and provide a valued keepsake upon their return.
Your support will allow us to purchase guidebooks for each student and a copy for the school library, enticing other students to strive for a future trip.
The trip will be eight days; the memories, supported by a quality guidebook will last forever. This project is about changing lives. Our needs are great. Please help our students get the most out of this extraordinary experience. I selected the Eyewitness Guidebooks because of their low cost and attention to detail with text and photos.
