Having a classroom that is warm and engaging is an essential part of my job. My little friends (students) come to school for the first time and learn all kinds of things, not only from me but from each other as well. Most of the magic happens on the rug during morning circle when we share and chat. The rug is a special place where we practice listening and speaking.
Having a rug with letters and numbers on it not only helps friends with letter recognition but also keeps friends seated and still.
I try to have each student sit on the first letter of their name so each student has their own space while learning everyone's letters on the rug. The rug also helps them learn colors, shapes, and numbers, but also what it means to sit "next to" or "behind" or "beside" or "across from." It builds vocabulary, offers bright colors, and has numbers for us to practice counting too. When circle time is over and my students move on to centers, I find many of them choose something to bring to the rug for a comfy spot to sit and learn.
