Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach small group ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) instruction with an amazing, creative group of students that are always ready for something new. I get the opportunity to support my students directly during a time in their life which is often their first exposure to English. Together we work on the areas of academics where they struggle the most so that they will succeed in the classroom.

My students are just beginning on their journey to learning English but that doesn't mean they don't have the same interests and want to read the same level of adventure, drama and excitement of their peers. When they go to the library to borrow a book their English reading level may not be commensurate to their interests and reading levels in their first language. I am requesting Spanish editions of favorite books so that my students can have both editions. With this project they will be able to have equal access to stimulate the imagination, cultivate a love of reading, and have the opportunity to join in book discussions with peers. It's huge for them to have the opportunity to sit next to their peers, chapter books in hand, equally enjoying Harry Potter or Captain Underpants. It is so important within the social dynamics and community of a school for children to be able to connect with each other. It is my hope that this project continues to encourage and support our ESOL students for years to come. Thank you.
