"Mom! Dad! I edited my first draft on an iPad in school today!" Do you remember how excited you were when you learned something new? Technology is an integral part of the classroom and the addition of the iPad would increase interest as well as free the teacher from timely administrative tasks.
I work in a very challenging setting.
The challenges I face everyday are nowhere near the difficulties that my students are confronted with. My school is a Title I school. We are located in an urban, high crime area which has increased the difficulty in my students' daily life. Within the classroom we have established a mini community that is transferable to their external world. We have done this by creating a highly structured ITT/special education classroom. Within the classroom we have ample technology. However, as with most technology, ours is becoming outdated. The addition of the iPad into the professional teaching field has ample educational tools and uses for teaching English Language Arts. As with most teenagers, they are OBSESSED with Apple products. This product will ignite student interest and participation within the classroom.
My students struggle with basic Reading and Writing. The iPad and protective case will allow the students to use Literacy Software like Reading, Pocket Phonics, and other educational tools to enhance their abilities to learn in a fun way. All this will be on the SMARTboard for whole class instruction. The iPad will aide in helping special needs students to learn. It will provide my students a way to learn and process new information. It will also be used as an aide to the writing process. I plan to take students' rough drafts and have them digitally scanned. I will then edit their paper through a PDF document on the iPad. Students will be able to self edit their paper digitally on the iPad. This will help them with understanding. The iPad will increase students' interest, allow the students to access new technology and give them a chance at improving their core knowledge. Special needs students need to have all senses stimulated in order to help them process new information, the iPad does that for them.
School is hard for a lot of people, but especially hard for special needs students.
With all the changes in schools today, it is getting more difficult to navigate all the paperwork that is required, it is especially hard when working with Special needs students. The iPad will help my students and I perform at our maximum potentials while helping us to transition into a 21st century classroom.
