Today's students need to acquire 21st century skills. This piece of technology will enable them to do that!
My students range from 7th graders to 12th graders.
Many are first generation American-born with their heritage coming from countries all over the world. They are inquisitive and curious, playful and social, motivated and inspiring. They attend a very large selective enrollment school in a large city in Illinois. This means the students commute to the school from all corners of the city, sometimes causing them to spend hours a day on public transportation.
My Project
I teach 7th grade History and German language. In both subjects an iPad will fundamentally transform the way I teach and the way students learn. In today's world, both content areas can by greatly enhanced by use the technology the iPad offers: videos, interactive websites and apps. For example, when discussing ancient Ur, capital city of the Sumerians and birthplace of Abraham, the iPad can be the tool to make Ur come alive for students. Students would use the iPad to see discovered artifacts that are currently in the British Museum, the University of Pennsylvania and the Museum of Baghdad via their websites and interactive features. Having this kind of access to the places that maintain pieces of history goes well beyond the more traditional access of images in a weighty textbook. Likewise in German classes, the iPad would be invaluable for students in terms of accessing the current, living language of modern Germany.
Nearly 70% of my students qualify for free and reduced lunches.
This means my students don't have day-to-day access to new and exciting technologies like the iPad. Funding this project will not only provide students exposure to technologies they must master in their century, but show them the truly transformational educational value they can serve.
