Teaching my students to regard the iPads as a valid art making tool while "finger painting" is causing a conflict. These styluses will help simulate drawing in this rich and transformative digital medium and help my students be precise and detailed with good craftsmanship.
I teach the entire population of K-5th graders at my suburban school.
We took place in a year long pilot of a class set of iPads that traveled through the building. When they landed in my art room the magic was so exciting that I scrambled to find new opportunities to offer digital art making to my students with after school sessions and summer school. I wrote a grant also to have an iPad for our classroom as well. This touch screen intuitive device has transformative properties that we've only begun explore. This project will help my students interact with the drawing apps in a much more detailed and confident way so that they will not be hindered by their lack of dexterity in their art making.
My Project
When we had the chance to create art on the iPads, I found that my students were very quick to understand the device's interface, tools and navigation. We spent very little time on the how to's of using the iPad and most of our time on creating. The only thing I was seeing them struggle with was accuracy. Since they were drawing with their fingers, the lines were hard to predict. They weren't able to touch exactly where they wanted unless they zoomed in. Then, zooming in too much took away their overall sense of the composition which caused more inaccuracies. I think this can all be minimalized with a stylus that delivers both control and precision within a reasonable canvas size.
I want my art students to be confident using 21st century tools to create art, graphic designs, photographic pieces, and whatever else technology delivers.
I want to offer students a chance to have a meaningful and successful art making experience digitally as well as physically.
