This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
In two weeks, I will meet my new second grade students! Our school is on the South side of Chicago, in the Englewood neighborhood. This is my first year at this school, and I was shocked to enter my new room and see that an integral component to teaching reading was missing- books! Although my students will each have one hardcover anthology, there are no library books in the classroom. From experience, I know how central the classroom library is to fostering a genuine love of reading. It is a place where in centers and free time, students can choose a book they are interested in and read independently. In years past, this has become my students' favorite place. They begged to go there and read. I am hoping to create that kind of environment in my new classroom, but first, I need good quality literature. These books open students to new ideas, develop vocabulary and give them a real sense of independence. Please help me to create a space where my students can delve into reading and make good books a permanent part of their lives. This proposal is one of three.
