Breaking It Down- A School Wide Composting Project
My students need 15 Compost Heaps, 4 Temperature Probes, and 4 Soil Moisture Meters to help them start composting their school cafeteria vegetable scraps.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Can our students really turn vegetable waste into gold? My students want to try. They have built some mini greenhouses and now need good soil to put in them. Composting the vegetable waste from the school cafeteria should do the trick. This is where science comes into play.
Our school's Southwest high desert location has good soil for sage but bad soil for vegetables.
We also have over 95% of our students coming from minority and/or poverty level households. In order to combine service learning with science, our students want to learn how composting works and at the same time create good soil for our mini-greenhouse by doing hands on science instead of just reading about it.
My Project
In order to discover the science in rotting vegetable matter we need to observe microorganisms with microscopes and monitor the temperature and moisture of the compost heap. We have the microscopes but need the compost temperature and moisture probes in order to do the hands on learning about composting. This is where we need your help. As our school district continues to have its funding cut, outside support becomes more critical to providing hands on learning experiences.
Your donation will make this project become a reality.
Young scientists will learn about science by using it. The test equipment that you help us purchase will allow students to collect real data and learn how to make the best organic soil in town while helping recycle vegetable wastes that would otherwise wind up in a trash pile. It's a win-win situation for everyone.
