Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Adolescence is such a crucial age for a child. As they begin to discover new hobbies and interests, my intent for this club is to keep them away from TV and devices for a while and help them discover a new-found love for working with wood.
It is so important to remind young minds that anyone, no matter the skill-set, race or gender, is capable of creating.
As a small, urban, public school in the heart of Milwaukee we’ve struggled to find volunteers and the space to be able to offer as many recreational programs as other, larger schools can accommodate. This year we have officially found a space and all we need are the materials!
I want my students to unwind from the stress of everyday life (pre-teens are always so stressed!) and just build.
My Project
By introducing a variety of woodworking skills including handling a hammer and handsaw, learning to use screws, nails and sandpaper and of course the importance of making careful measurements, my students will find a sense of satisfaction completing projects all on their own.
We've never had a woodworking club so we're starting from scratch and are looking for the bare essentials.
I am most looking forward to their reactions after they have cut, nailed, sanded and stained a simple piece of wood into something beautiful. Going forward, I am hoping to expand the club to be able to offer it to more than 12 students at a time and introduce power tools!
