I work in a Title I School where we focus on becoming mathematicians, letter investigators, reading experts, authors, citizens, and scientists. Our class motto is that we can each achieve success through respect, self-control, discipline, and perseverance as we become leaders in our classroom, school, and community.
My scholars have become invested in their learning and doing their best.
We are committed to coming to school every day ready to learn and do our best. Through mastering our academic goals and standards and gaining strong character qualities, my scholars will be set up for success. My students will be impacted in a way that will push them to the next level to be college bound. They will have more ways to demonstrate their knowledge and ways of thinking. Kindergarten is such a valuable asset to these scholars. It is important to set scholars up for success and give them a solid foundation academically that they need for the rest of their academic journey.
My Project
My project is to help teach students how to understand financial responsibility. This project will take my current system to a level of financial application. My students currently receive positive behavior tickets throughout the school day within the classroom and the school facilities. In the past, I have used their tickets as a means to earn rewards out of the treasure chest. We also have quarterly bashes that cost a certain amount of tickets. In kindergarten, students struggle with saving versus spending. They also struggle with making choices about immediate or delayed gratification. In kindergarten, we cover understanding aspects of money, but I want something more for my students.
Financial wisdom begins with knowing that spending is all about choices and knowing you can't have it all.
I want my students to not only be able to recognize and understand coins, but also understand spending and saving. I want students to know the importance of delayed gratification, or working hard and saving money to reach a goal.
As students receive their tickets, they will deposit their ticket with me to receive one cent per ticket, placing it into their banks. On Fridays, we will sort our coins to see if we can make change for larger coins. This will help students learn the value of different coins in an applicable way.
Through their individual classroom banks, students will be able to set aside money for their bash or higher costing items in the treasure chest. They will be able to make choices about their spending in a hands-on way. This project will empower my students to see the value of money and the difference between immediate gratification or hard work and prolonged gratification.
