As a teacher and the K-5 Math Leader in a Title I elementary school, I often times notice that our students are not exposed to science outside of the classroom. Over seventy percent of our campus receives free or reduced-price lunch and often times, we have students who are not capable of even having their parents supply their own school supplies.
Our school is located in an area that was hit and affected by Hurricane Harvey, but our students are actively coming to school eager to learn.
In my classroom, I work hard to ensure a safe, secure and comfortable environment for learning and seek ways to make learning innovative. We have created a culture on our campus where our students actually look forward to the bus pulling up at their houses in the morning to bring them to school.
These kids will take advantage of any learning opportunity that is brought their way. Our motto at our campus is Reach for the Stars and our students do their best to reach beyond them.
ALL ABOARD THE SPACECRAFT TO MARS! Our 3rd – 5th graders would like to do a STEM Financial Literacy project where they have to earn money, make purchases and be able to use the supplies they purchase to conduct Mission to Mars Inquiry-based STEM Challenges!
This project will motivate our students to learn more about Mars, utilize their financial literacy skills and make real world connections.
Students will be able to add to their bank accounts a daily salary for attendance. Students earn extra money for class participation, making wise choices, and doing their best on work. Students can also earn stipends from their bus drivers, and cafeteria workers for good behavior.
Students can lose money for not meeting classroom expectations. We need the supplies in this grant to purchase the Mission to Mars STEM Challenge supplies. These supplies will be used by the students to complete building a balloon rocket, a spaghetti rover, a cd hover, a parachute, and a solar oven!
In order for students to complete a STEM challenge, they must first earn enough money to purchase from our Space Station the supplies for the activity. If students mess up while conducting an activity they will have to repurchase the supplies they need.
Each student will be eligible to take out one loan but they must be able to calculate their interest and pay the loan back.
The pasta will be used for the pasta rovers. The balloons, CDs, and hot glue will be used for the hover craft. The different paper filters and string will be used for the parachute. The binding material will be used in all of the projects.
