My students are some of the hardest working people you will ever meet. They are in high school and have special needs. Each of my students consistently amaze me by finding ways to overcome their learning barriers in order to succeed in their schooling. They truly enjoy learning and all have ambitions to go to work after high school. My school is geared towards teaching life skills and skills that will help promote the most independent lives possible for my students. We focus on activities of daily living and a job readiness curriculum.
My Project
My colleague and I will utilize the materials to start a student-run shop. Students will be in charge of making and selling custom made t-shirts, bags, and other goods utilizing a Cricut machine. This project will be adapted into five separate tiers depending on abilities. Some students will be required to formulate a business plan by setting the price for the custom goods. They will need to determine the cost to make each item and what they will need to sell it for in order to make a profit. Other students will be working on their teamwork, counting and communication skills by taking inventory (vinyl sheets, blank t-shirts by size, blank bags, etc. ) and making sure that we have enough supplies for future orders. The third group will be working on following directions by executing the custom orders. The forth group will work on their written and technologic by creating order forms. The last group will work on their pragmatic skills by taking the orders and selling the merchandise. They will utilize the Cricut machine and Vinyl to make the orders. All students will have the opportunity to practice multiple skills as the year progresses. Money earned will go towards new supplies.
The feeling of self-worth this project will give to my students cannot be overstated.
Sadly, many people have a tendency to over look people with special needs. This project can allow them to have that feeling of success and take pride in their work. It will also teach them the necessary skills such as money management, teamwork, and interpersonal skills that are necessary for life after high school.
