Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students are amazing and resilient. Many are immigrants or from immigrant families. Many are affected by being homeless and neighborhood violence, but come to school every day ready to learn.
In a neighborhood where violence is an everyday part of life, school becomes so much more than just a place to learn.
The students in my classroom recognize the value of an education as a means to a positive future and hopefully, someday a safer community, as well.
Our students are English Language Learners in an urban neighborhood. School is their safe haven and a place where they can focus on a positive future. They are eager to learn and take pride in the investment of others in their education.
My Project
Every year we have always completed an interdisciplinary unit in which students act as architects and designers to design their own dream mini house, they would research small houses, jobs involved in building and designing houses, create a floor plan, and build a small model.
This year when beginning to discuss this house design unit with my students it evolved into a conversation about how to create safe neighborhoods.
My students started asking questions about how they could make housing more affordable. Then asking, can architecture and design affect safety in a neighborhood? These are very relevant questions/challenges for students living in an urban community.
This year I want to make this project bigger, and help them answer these questions. Students will research the role that design can play in neighborhood safety. They will work together to act as civil engineers and architects to create an urban neighborhood. They will design the neighborhood and affordable small houses. They will use CoSpaces to create a digital representation/model that can be explored digitally and even exported to their merge cubes.
For the final step students will be able to print their model in small scale and present it to the school.
