My high school students are some of the best kids ever! Some of the students belong to military families (active and retired) stationed at Ft. Benning, GA and some students come from low-income homes. I am able to relate to these students as a military kid and now wife! They are very near and dear to my heart. These students are one of a kind. I love everything about my job because I get to spend every day with these creative, innovative, athletic, energetic, and talented kids.
My wonderful students are worthy of a quality education with fun, engaging, and exciting resources.
I know that I have been given the great privilege of teaching these students for a reason. Being able to support academics, athletics, and performing arts is the best of all worlds. I want to support my students' needs by engaging them with authentic, STEM centered, hands-on learning opportunities that will ensure they receive a well rounded experience.
My Project
My high school students are eager to give back to those who sacrifice so much for us. My husband is currently deployed overseas and my class had the idea of sending care packages to the soldiers in his unit as well as other soldiers in the Middle East. A common necessity for these soldiers is soap.
My students want to create organic, handmade soaps using essential oils with calming and healing properties for deployed soldiers.
Deployed soldiers often face anxiety and dry skin while working to keep us safe. The least we can do is support them with basic necessities while providing them with emotional benefits. My students will be participating and engaging in a STEM Unit that addresses a real world problem while participating in skills based learning.
Students will use goats milk, honey, and oatmeal as their soap bases. They will use the silicone spoons to mix in essential oils, dried lavender flowers, and oats in the stainless steal bowl. Using the silicone molds, students will pour in their soap mixtures. While the soap is setting, students will hand write letters to each of the soldiers and create labels for packaging and ensure that all ingredients are listed. With the extra essential oils, students will put them in spray bottles with water which will give soldiers the healing properties of anti-anxiety and calming lavender to spray on their pillows. This will help them sleep peacefully after a long day of work.
In my classroom, we often talk about spreading joy. When my students expressed interest in supporting deployed soldiers, like my husband, I wanted to cry. Students will be learning life skills with empathy while supporting heroes. This one act of kindness will give them the skills to become chefs, scientists, nurses, mothers/fathers, or humanitarians.
