My Students

I work in an amazing art integrated public school in Kentucky. Our students audition and are accepted into our school for creative and performing arts. This makes for a very unique and wonderful teaching and learning environment. Though all our students have the commonality of being identified as talented in their focus arts areas, we have a diverse population of students with a wide range of academic interests and abilities that come from all over our city.

My students are highly motivated and hardworking children.

Because of their diverse educational backgrounds, they have all had different scientific and math experiences, but providing engaging and motivating hands-on experiences and online tools in the lab allows all my students the ability to teach and learn from one another and achieve success. Students get an insider's view of how engineers apply mathematical skills and scientific knowledge to solve problems. In my classroom, we think and wonder, wonder and think, each and every day. It is my intention to create 21st century thinkers and problem solvers.

My Project

"The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice. The Goals interconnect and in order to leave no one behind, it ís important that we achieve each Goal and target by 2030." (un.org)

My students have been researching the UN Sustainability Goals, trying to determine ways that they, as fifth graders, can contribute to helping the world achieve them by 2030- they have been shocked to learn that not all kids their age have access to clean water, food, and education, but they have also expressed concerns about feeling like they are powerless to make a difference.

I want to immerse them in a unit about how we can contribute to engineering design solutions to give all people access to clean water through simple and affordable water filter systems.

We will study water filtration systems commonly used in their households, faucet filters, Britas, countertop filters, and then work with filter cartridges to test how they work to modify our drinking water. We will also read about children who have made a difference in their communities to find clean water. The students will then research design solutions for small portable filtration systems and prototype their own using our 3D printer and filament. Finally students will print their final designs using food grade filament.

Students need to feel empowered that their choices and their contributions can make a global impact.
