This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students have many challenges that they face daily. Ninety-two percent of the children in our particular school come from poverty. Almost every child in the school gets free or reduced lunch daily. Yet, with the challenges they face, they come to school excited and ready to learn.
I teach Kindergarten.
This is a time when students need to be up moving, touching, manipulating items and exploring. Kindergarten is a fun time. Although my students may have challenges at home, I want their school experience to be as good as I can make it. Children spend lots of time on the floor in kindergarten. They learn a lot about how things work from manipulating blocks. They love to build with Lego's, put together floor puzzles, sit together reading on the floor. They love to be down on the floor working.
My Project
This section of the school that our class is in is old. It has carpet glued on the old asbestos tile. The cost of removal makes it prohibitive, but the carpet needed to be replaced years ago. I hate to have them play on the old carpeting. I would love to have a large 15 X 30 area rug to place down to give plenty of room for building with Lego's, listening to stories, dramatic play areas and all the wonderful things that kindergartners do.
I envision a classroom that is beautiful, clean, and inviting (yes, still old), but not dingy.
Your support of this project would make a world of difference in what my students are able to do in the classroom. As it is now, I hate to have them building floor puzzles on the floor or building Lego cities on the floor. A large area rug would make a tremendous difference to my classroom.
