This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My scholars are energetic, hard working, and excited about learning. Our school is located in a low income area of St. Petersburg, FL with nearly all of our scholars eligible for the free lunch program. Many of our families lack the resources to provide educational materials in their homes that will supplement and enhance what their scholars are working on in school.
All of our families want what is best for their scholars.
But, they don't always know how or don't have the time during the school day to engage with the school. We are trying to increase family and community involvement by having monthly family engagement activities in the evening.
My Project
In order to increase family engagement and encourage a love of literacy, our school is hosting a winter themed literacy night for our entire school. There will be different stations with interactive activities families will participate in together that they can replicate at home to support their scholars' literacy development. The activities will also include take home materials such as question stems, reading journals and parent friendly versions of state standards so families are better equipped to support their students at home.
We want each family to be able to leave this event with a book to keep.
Since this event is happening right before winter break, we hope they can use their new book as well as the materials and experiences gained through the night's activities to engage their scholars during the break.
