Pencils, Pencils, Pencils. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that pencils could be one of the biggest challenges my students and I face in the classroom.
My students this year are some of the most motivated students I have ever encountered.
They are hard-working, eager learners. We use pencils almost every minute of every day, for everything from note-taking to observation making and creative writing. Pencils need to be sharpened about 3-4 times daily and with the perfectionist students I seem to have this year, sometimes even more. I don't fault them for it, but I probably hear the words, "I need to sharpen my pencil," or, "my pencil broke," about 20-50 times daily.
My Project
I am requesting 9 packages of Ticonderoga triangular pencils and a super sharpener to go with the pencils, for heavy duty use. The students will use the pencils on a daily basis. As a third grade team, we usually have students bring in supplies early in the year. At this point, all supplies are running dry and most of the pencils the students bring in break easily or don't sharpen well. Most years, I usually find myself buying more to compensate.
Growing up, I remember my teachers just expecting me to have a pencil or two ready everyday when I came to class.
With my students, I can hardly expect that everyone will even bring a backpack on a daily basis. I certainly wish that having pencils in my classroom was the least of my worries. As insignificant as the issue may seem, having sharp pencils at the ready makes for a much more pleasant, less chaotic day of learning.
