Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
In a STEM magnet school, my students are bused in from locations all over the city. Many of my students catch the school bus before their peers would even imagine waking up. They do this to be part of the unique opportunity offered at my school. My students know that the great education they receive is their first step toward changing the world they live in.
Minority students from all measured groups at my school score proficient at a rate more than 50% above the state average in English, more than 40% above in Math, and more than 40% above in Science.
My school provides an opportunity for students with an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) to engage in two years of rigorous coursework exploring STEM. Before you think my school is one set aside for the "privileged," please know that my campus is classified as a highest poverty school. It is not a school for the privileged, but it is a school for the dedicated. My school is a school for students who are willing to work for something more, and shatter the achievement gap.
My Project
My school community is faced with the challenge of poor air quality. Poor air quality leads to quite a few health issues, and it is often difficult to assess how bad the air quality is at any given moment. Living in close proximity to smoke from California wildfires and other pollution sources, my school community needs an easy way to assess current air quality levels. Without having an easy way to determine the risk, many in the community unknowingly increase exposure to unhealthy air. As part of the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Challenge, I hope to provide my students the opportunity to solve this problem.
My students want to find a solution to the problem of detecting poor air quality using their STEM skills as part of the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Challenge.
STEM can be used to find an easy means for monitoring current air quality. It is one thing to check a periodically updated website for air quality reports for the entire area, but it would be far more effective to have a method for easy monitoring of air quality at a specific location.
For this project, I am asking for a variety of electronics components, wire, sensors, and Arduino compatible boards so that I can let students have the materials to produce a potential STEM solution for this problem. These materials will be used by students in their open ended response to the problem of air quality as part of the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Challenge.
