This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My 3 year olds are some of the most amazing children I have ever met. They thrive while living in one of the most dangerous communities in our nation's capital. Some have gone through more in their young lives than many of us will every have to endure in a lifetime. Yet every day, they walk down a hill to school where they are able to escape the violence that riddles their neighborhood and find solace in our classroom. Despite all of the challenges they face outside the school walls, they still come to school each day ready and excited to learn.
My students blossom with the educational and enrichment opportunities being offered, which helps them to build their background knowledge and exposes them to things they otherwise wouldn't be exposed to.
For all of them, coming to school is where they have any opportunities to build their academic and social foundations to set them up for success later in life.
My Project
Like most young children, my students love books and reading. Unfortunately, there classroom library has little to no books that accurately represent them. They can't see themselves in the stories they are reading. My students attend a school that is 100% African American and often can't picture themselves in the stories because they can't see themselves in them.
These books represent both boys and girls, young and old, and will allow my students the opportunity to have their lives represented in print.
Students will be able to relate to the characters in these stories and continue to build on their love of reading. It is my hope, with these books will instill the joy and love of reading into my three year olds for the rest of their lives.
