I teach 6th grade Language Arts in a low-income community school in Florida. Many of my students are behind grade level in reading but are determined and motivated to work hard to improve in their reading. My school has access to very few high-interest, grade level appropriate novels. Many of my students love to read but have no access to books.
This year I have a group of students in one of my classes that are at the appropriate reading level for their grade but do not have access to books to help them maintain and improve their reading. In this class I was fortunate enough to be able to borrow a class set of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. My students have fell in love with the book and arrived early to class each day in order to have the the entire class time to read. Through donorschoose.org I have been able to secure funding for the second and third Harry Potter book.
We can continue learning through reading high interest, grade level appropriate books by reading the fourth book in the series, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. With this project my students will each get their own copy of the book that they will be able to keep when we finish reading the book. More importantly, if each of my students has their own copy of the book they will be able to write in their book and learn from actively reading.
In the past, I have found that if a student is allowed to write in their own copy of the book they are much more engaged with reading and it helps improve comprehension. Your help will ensure that my students continue to make improvements in their reading comprehension and that they find a love of reading. My students have fallen in love with reading with the Harry Potters book and I know that I can take them even further with their reading if we can gain access to these books.
