I currently teach elementary special education elementary class in Antioch, California where 75% percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. More than 75% of my students come from low-income areas in Antioch. Students in our special education class come to school each day ready and eager to learn, but most of them are in in need of a fitness program.
These students have limited access to fitness activities and few opportunities for participating in organized sports.
A classroom walking program will give each student an opportunity for achieving fitness related rewards.
My Project
The classroom walking program will take place every morning. Each student will wear a fitness tracker as they walk together around a set trail on our campus. Fitness is a vital part of living a healthy lifestyle as it promotes success in personal and academic areas creating a larger chance for a productive future. The classroom walking program will take place every morning. Each student will wear a fitness tracker as they walk together around a set trail on our camp
These fitness trackers will be used daily in my special education class to motivate students to try their very best in our classroom walking and fitness program.
Students will learn about the importance of making SMART goals ( specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-bound goals). Students will make short-term (weekly goals) and long-term goals (quarterly). Each class students will track and record their goals.
Students will also be able to make cross-curricular connections in physical education and math by using the fitness tracker to calculate how many steps are equivalent to a mile tracker and monitor their progress over the school year. Also, students can present the data in various ways (bar graph, line graph, line plot, etc.). Students can make connections in ELA by comparing and contrasting, and reflect upon the information. Students will be motivated and excited to learn with these new fitness trackers.
