My Students

Five years ago two students in my 7th grade class said they wished they could take apart electronics to see how they work. I suggested that we start an after school club to do just that. Pretty soon we were doing a lot more than taking things apart. Students have learned basic electronic skills and knowledge including creating circuits, how to solder, programming Arduinos, etc. Students also learn how to brainstorm, plan, prototype, create, and share their completed projects.

By providing a free, student driven Electronics/Makers Club our students continue to show their desire and passion for gaining technological skills and experiences that they lack access to in their daily lives.

Girls are a focus for recruitment and as a result we often hover around 40-50% of our 20 student average being 7th and 8th grade girls.

Not only has the Club been student driven but the community support for the club has been phenomenal. We have had several engineers volunteer to work with the students as well as local organizations supporting our basic needs to keep the program free to students.

My Project

My students are constantly looking for opportunities to enhance their education. Our Electronics/Makers Club has created many interesting projects over the years but we have always been restricted due to material costs. By creating and manufacturing our own products we can build complex systems for cheaper and build necessary skills for the future at the same time.

Programming a CNC machine and laser cutter will allow students to take their ideas from a possibility in their head to a reality in their hands.

We are planning to use the laser cutter for engineering projects that the students will design as well as supporting instructional materials for labs. We will also be closely working with all other departments in the school to build custom orders as a fundraiser and school culture building activities.Examples are 3D and laser cut electrified ukuleles, portable blue tooth speakers, programmable robot chassis, scientific and architectural models, lab testing equipment, small business idea prototyping, plaques and awards, etc.

This equipment will also provide a proof of concept for all of our middle schools making it a project that will have a huge multiplying affect throughout our district. Our students have projects ready and are eagerly waiting for your support. Thank you for your help in making these students dreams a reality!
